After all these years, LaCie's storage hardware still looks better than storage hardware from pretty much any other vendor. And if you're starting up a small business, you may be interested in what the company's got on offer now. This week, LaCie announced the 5big Office Series, its latest five-bay network attached storage solutions. The 5big Office Series, powered by Windows Home Server 2011, packs a 1.6GHz 64-bit Atom CPU, 2GB of RAM and plenty of options. There's a single-drive edition that allows users to add additional drives, as needed, for up to 10TB of total capacity. It reduces the initial... Read more...
Fans of Google's Android platform are proving to be a patient lot. It hasn't been easy pulling for Android in the tablet space, which for a period of time was limited to a few overpriced and underwhelming Gingerbread slates. Things began to change when Honeycomb came out, the first version of Android designed specifically for tablets, but even then it started to feel like if you've seen one Android tablet, you've seen them all. Lately we've found ourselves asking, 'Where's all the innovation that's supposed to be associated with an open source platform, and with so many different manufacturers... Read more...

It's ergonomic...without being split. Some folks swear by the split keyboards, and some cannot stand to be away from a keyboard that's totally connected. Maybe, just maybe, the compromise has arrived. Microsoft Hardware just released the Comfort Curve Keyboard 3000, a new keyboard design that maintains the connected nature of a standard keyboard, while adding a wave shape that helps from an ergonomics perspective. Media keys also allow users easy access to music, videos and more with just a touch of a key, and unlike most ergo keyboards, this one is actually super affordable. It'll ship this month... If Intel's impending march into the mobile space is supposed to intimidate ARM, it isn't working, at least not publicly. Just a day before Computex 2011 kicked off, the current leader in mobile processors for handheld devices like smartphones and tablets declared that it intends to grab half of the mobile PC market by 2015. According to ARM president Tudor Brown, ARM currently claims 10 percent of the entire mobile market and expects that number to increase to 15 percent by the end of the year. Fueling ARM's growth as of late is the emerging tablet market, a segment sparked by Apple's iPad with... Read more...
So, what's Microsoft up to? Isn't that a question that you'd love an answer to! Rumblings have been all over the place lately, with "Ventura" targeted as a replacement for the Zune, a future Windows Phone 7 update possibly pushed out, and now, lots of new hardware development jobs. Microsoft has just listed a handful of Xbox-related job listings on LinkedIn, and one has to wonder: why would you hire a load of Xbox engineers when the 360 has been around for a good while, and is pretty seasoned as-is? Well, what is a new Xbox is coming? The new listings have some very interesting language in them.... Read more...
Holiday shopping at one of the web's popular retailers was impossible for some European users over the weekend. Amazon's websites in Europe were down for more than half an hour on Sunday night. Although a group of activists by the name "Anonymous" had encouraged an online attack in an attempt to crash Amazon.com by overwhelming it with requests, the outage experienced by Amazon's European websites over the weekend was unrelated to any such attack. It appears the outage was caused by a hardware failure in the company's European data center network. According to a spokeswoman for Amazon, "The brief... Read more...
As far as we knew, Jolicloud was a software company. And they still are. But now, they're a hardware company too. Or at least they are partnering with a computer maker in order to make themselves seem like one! Either way, Jolicloud is doing the unthinkable soon: they'll be introducing a netbook of their own with their own Jolibook operating system onboard. This will be going up against dozens and dozens of netbooks powered by Windows 7, and considering that Microsoft's OS is the one with the most mindshare, it looks like Jolicloud will be facing an uphill battle to gain acceptance in the market.... We've known from earlier reports that Amazon currently has a number of color options in the lab for what could end up being a color Kindle, but the company is steadfast is saying that such a device is still a very, very long ways out. The original Kindle was Amazon's first foray into the hardware realm, and things have definitely turned out great for them. It's a hot selling device, it has a huge amount of mind share, and it has placed Amazon atop the heap in the e-reader game. So if Amazon can do it once, why can't they do it again with something else? We aren't the only people asking that question,... Read more...
Is it over? Is it really, really over? Can we finally stick a fork in Psystar and consider them "done?" We can't honestly say we can until the company comes forward and makes a claim that it's giving up the act of selling its own flavor of OS X-loaded machines, but it sure looks as if it may have sold its final rig based on new reports from the legal side. According to AppleInsider, Apple and Psystar recently wrapped up nearly 1.5 years of court battling, but it was less of a handshake and more a judge-mandated injunction. An injunction of the "permanent" variety. The ruling essentially does what... Read more...
