Getting that perfect picture has always been a problem.  There are books and courses dedicated to the art of taking one, but what if you don't have time for all that?  Some cameras detect smiles and wait to take pictures until the time is perfect, other cameras take a few photos then run a quick facial recognition routine on them to determine which one had the most smiles.  But compared to those techniques, Sony's Happy Face technology certainly seems the most impressive, at least on paper. The idea behind the Happy Face technology is simple: The camera can take existing photos and... Read more...
Too bad it's today, January 15th. Today being the day of Steve Jobs' keynote at Macworld, this is going to get missed by many. But not by us: Happy Seventh Birthday Wikipedia (all right, we'll admit it: they emailed us about it).Yes, Wikipedia was founded on January 15th, 2001.  There's not much to add, except that despite Jimmy Wales' warnings, many people use it as a research tool for papers, and many more use it as a casual research tool.Don't forget they could still use donations.  And also, let's not forget - today is MLK's birthday as well.... Google always does something "different" with the logo on its homepage on a holiday or other special occasion, and New Year's Day is no different.  But it's not just about New Year's Day today.Today’s Google logo reads “2008” to celebrate new year’s, but also honors 25 years of TCP/IP. Clicking on it leads to a search result for the query January 1 tcp/ip. This protocol underlying the internet was fully switched to on January 1st, 1983, as Wikipedia’s entry on the subject knows.Look carefully at the confetti at the bottom of the logo to see if you can make out the special "message" there.... Yes, yes, it's all tweaking of the UI, but it's all these little touches, right, that draw people to particular products?Gmail has added colored labels. Now, instead of just seeing the text of a label next to the subject, you’ll see the label in color (pictured). You can use either white text on the selected color or colored text on a lighter background of the same color. Strictly speaking, it’s just prettying up the UI, but still … Now, what are the drawbacks? Well, you have to use the newer version of Gmail, as I said. You also have to use IE7 and Firefox 2.x, as well (I would hope you were already... Read more...
The Internet was founded on the principle of equal access for all, and though that's not the only focus of the OneWebDay project, it's a very important part of it.For those unfamiliar, September 22 has been dubbed One Web Day (OWD for short), and this year will be the second annual "celebration" of the event. The mission of OWD is simple and optimistic: "to create, maintain, advance and promote a global day to celebrate online life." People around the world are encouraged to think of themselves as responsible for the existence and the quality of the Internet (does that mean we get to ban all trolls... Read more...

Expect "not much" to happen after noontime in the cubicle farms. In office parks and skyscrapers all over the map, this afternoon is an opportunity for companies to disappoint and anger their employees with crummy gifts and alcohol-free office parties. Slate magazine asked for entries for their Corporate Scrooge contest, and boy, they got some doozies. Perhaps the most Dickensian example comes from Scrooge's homeland. One writer nominated his former employer, David Bury Ltd in the Dickensian-sounding town of Grimsby. "During my time with the company as a consumer electronic service engineer,... Read more...
Well, "Black Friday" has come and gone. But we who live on the cutting edge don't pay attention to such outdated calendar occasions. We go to work on the Monday after Thanksgiving, boot up the web browser, and buy, buy, buy. Nothing evokes the holiday retail season more than shoppers lined up outside of department stores at 4:59 a.m., the day after Thanksgiving, waiting to snap up the hottest deals. The Internet has its own, albeit less visual, start to the holiday season: Cyber Monday. It marks the day folks return to the office after Thanksgiving, replete with access to superfast...
