Judging by subscription numbers, it seems that Blizzard’s World of Warcraft shows no signs of slowing down.   It has dominated the market, and until recently seemed as if it would never face a real challenger. Then the Age of Conan came about and sold more than 400,000 copies in its first week. “The initial sales and reviews are very encouraging, and it’s great to see that so many are enjoying Age of Conan,” said Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas.  “This is just the beginning, and we already look forward to massive updates and cool new features.  We believe our focus on making Conan unique... Lately rumors have been floating around that Nehalem has hit a serious snag and won’t ship this year.  What does Intel have to say on the subject?"Nehalem ... is still scheduled to launch in the second half of the year," [Intel CEO Paul] Otellini told the company's annual meeting of shareholders. He also confirmed plans to quickly increase output of computer processors made with the latest technology, which can etch circuits 45 nanometers wide, 30 percent smaller than previous chips using a 65-nanometer process. We wouldn’t be surprised to see at least a few Nehalem-powered demo boxes when we hit... The word on the streets of Taipei is that Intel is planning what could very well be the pre-Nehalem price cuts on existing and upcoming Core 2-based products.  The current plan is to reduce prices in the third quarter and add a few more CPUs just to firm-up the low and mid-range.  This could very well be a sign that we can expect a very strong launch from Nehalem, but we’ll continue to keep our fingers crossed just in case. “The Core 2 Quad 9450, currently priced at US$316, will be phased out of the market to be replaced by the Core 2 Quad 9400 at 2.66GHz and a price of US$266.  The... Grand Theft Auto IV sold six million copies in its first week alone, netting $500 million for its publisher, Take-Two Interactive. That's even better than the wildest estimates by industry pundits, and probably will make Electronic Arts' bid to purchase Take Two a whole lot more expensive. The significance of the sales extends beyond buoying Take-Two, a company that has had its share of legal, financial and management struggles in the last few years. The company is the subject of a $2 billion hostile takeover effort by Electronic Arts, which is offering Take Two shareholders $25.74 a share for... Read more...
You may or may not know web mogul and conversational media entrepreneur Jason Calacanis but it's safe to say that he "got it" when weblogs were just starting to become hip.  Along the way, the properties he built (Engadget, Joystiq etc) were picked by companies like AOL for just a little bit of coin.  Though not breaking news, it's safe to say his latest start-up is gaining traction and proving relevance. Calacanis' latest vision is called Mahalo and he's taking on traditional search engines giants like Google and Yahoo but with Wikipedia-like... What is a hacker to do?  The general computer using population is becoming more educated about security, and modern browsers are taking the bite out of phishing scams.  Why not kill 2 birds with one stone and find a way to infect legitimate sites? That is exactly what hackers are now doing, with alarming success.  Thus far estimates range from the high 200 thousands to half a million infected websites, most of which seem to be legitimate:"On Wednesday, several security companies, including San Diego-based Websense Inc., said large numbers of legitimate sites, including ones with URLs belong to the... The ASUS Eee PC has shown that there is a substantial market for tiny laptops and thus it isn’t really surprising to see other major players release their own models. Enter the MSI Wind, a mini-notebook that might win the hearts of those looking for more storage space."The one kilogram laptop will run Microsoft’s Windows XP on an 8.9-inch or 10-inch wide LCD display on a 1024x 600 resolution. The notebook will ship with a proper 80Gb 2.5-inch hard drive, which is unusual in this class of machine."There’s no word on pricing or other specifications at this time.... Read more...
Anybody who has e-mail knows all about phishing scams. As spam filters and firewalls become more potent, and users become more sophisticated and informed about responding to online deceptions, the spammers have had to become more sophisticated in their approach too. One approach spammers now use is to avoid mass e-mailing and tailor their message to a few high-profile targets. They call this approach "whaling." Thousands of high-ranking executives across the country have been receiving e-mail messages this week that appear to be official subpoenas from the United States District Court in San Diego.... Multi-socket Nehalems paired with MetaRAM could provide some jaw-dropping numbers.  Here's a look at what dual-CPU boards might be able to accomplish:“Up to 16GB DDR3-1333 modules can be created, allowing up to 96GB RAM per CPU, or 192GB per dual-CPU board. If you go for slower DDR3-1066 and boards with three DIMMs per channel,- nine DIMMs per CPU - we have 144GB per CPU, or 288GB memory per mobo!”We’re certainly impressed by numbers like those, but we’ll wait until we can actually benchmark such a system’s memory performance before we draw any concrete conclusions.... We recently reported on the existence of the ECS G10IL, a mini-notebook/UMPC to compete with the Eee PC 900, but at the time ECS was very hush-hush on the details.  All that ended today when they posted the specs on their web site. The G10IL will be powered by a Diamondville CPU riding on a 945GSE chipset and featuring a single memory socket that can accommodate a 2GB module.  Adding to all that is an option of 8.9 inch or 10.2 inch screen, a 1.3 megapixel, and a 4 or 6 cell battery.  Perhaps the most interesting feature is the tri-band HSDP/HSUPA technology:“The 11-incher from ECS... Intel's announcement about their forthcoming CPU architectures hasn't fazed AMD.  In fact AMD claims that the integrated memory controller and QPI sound a lot like features AMD CPUs have had for several years now.  What's even better is that AMD more or less tipped their hand regarding AMD's future CPUs:On Dunnington (AMD's Randy) Allen said that AMD’s forthcoming Shanghai will be 45nm. “In 2009 we will have enhancement to hyper threading with HT3, DDR3 technology and eight cores or more. We’ll have six cores by the end of the year and you can expect to see eight cores in the 2009 timeframe,”... Read more...
In an impromptu pre-IDF press briefing today, Intel disclosed a wealth of new information regarding its roadmap product efforts, upcoming multi-core processors and their associated platforms.  The discussion, chaired by the Senior VP of Intel's Digital Enterprise Group, Pat Gelsinger, even covered additional detail of the company's future play in the discrete GPU space, code-named Larrabee.  More details here in our full report.... As with all rumors, please take the following news item with a grain of salt until we can receive official confirmation or denial from ECS.It seems that ECS is preparing a sub-$500 ultra-portable laptop to do battle with the popular ASUS Eee PC.  At present the product's moniker is the G10IL, but it might get a flashier name to compete with the ASUS Eee and Cloudbook.“Although currently still in production, and details incredibly sketchy at the moment as to what else you will get in the box or when it will launch in the UK, what we do know is that it comes with a built-in webcam, three USB...
