ARM has announced its next generation of graphics hardware (codenamed Mali). The new GPUs are meant to highlight a significant improvement in energy efficiency, with ARM claiming that its next-generation GPU architecture will be a whopping 45% more power efficient than previous models. The new GPUs are also meant to address a broad array of market needs, with products scaling from entry level devices to midrange and high-end products. Google has decided to renege on its promise to support both H.264 and open source codecs in its Chrome browser, dropping support for the former and vowing to completely back the latter. This change will take place in the next couple of months, the search giant said in Chromium blog post. "We expect even more rapid innovation in the web media platform in the coming year and are focusing our investments in those technologies that are developed and licensed based on open web principles," Google said. The Inquirer reports that sources close to NVIDIA are claiming there is a driver in development that will "unlock" H.264 support for all GeForce 6 and 7 GPU's. With ATI only offering H.264 support for a handful of their cards, it certainly looks as though NVIDIA might have the upper hand here. Let's just hope they don't expect us to pay an additional cost for H.264 support like they currently do with their excellent PureVideo decoder.
