Over the past few months, AT&T has been expanding into the Mexican market courtesy of key telecom acquisitions. We saw the first fruits of this expansion in January when AT&T announced that its wireless subscribers could add unlimited calling to Mexico for an extra $5 per month. The Microsoft-branded Lumia 535 is the most recent budget smartphone entry from Redmond, Washington (it seems as though all we’ve been getting lately from Microsoft are budget- and mid-range models), but it’s an older member of the Windows Phone family that’s getting a fresh price cut today. Often overlooked in the mobile market for some reason is prepaid plans, and AT&T’s prepaid GoPhone deals are about to get sweeter. Customers will soon enjoy an increase in monthly data without an increase in rates, and more importantly, they’ll be able to use their phones as a mobile WiFi hotspot. There are three new plans altogether: For $60 per month, one offers an increase in data (from 2GB to 2.5GB) with unlimited talk and talk and the WiFi hotspot capabilities. GoPhone, AT&T’s prepaid mobile service, was blessed with a new addition to the product family in the form of its first prepaid mobile hotspot and associated data-only service plans. The AT&T Unite mobile hotspot, a Netgear device, will be available starting on November 12th for $99.99. The plans to go with the Unite will be 250MB for $15 a week or 5GB of data for $50 a month, and the device features a 2.4-inch touchscreen display, up to 10 hours of battery life, and supports up to 10 WiFi devices simultaneously. AT&T announced that its GoPhone plans will now offer 4G LTE capabilities, which is a welcome and tasty performance upgrade for those who have opted for the pay-as-you-go phone service. Subscribers can bring their own handset to use with the plan or buy one of AT&T’s fourteen GoPhone devices, which range from the $14.99 Alcatel 510A to the HTC First, which costs $449.99. LG and AT&T are teaming up to offer the first smartphone for AT&T’s prepaid offering GoPhone. With this smartphone, customers will be able to choose from new data packages without having to commit to a long-term commitment. The new LG Thrive and its post-paid counterpart, the LG Phoenix, will be available on April 17. Both phones will feature a 3.2 inch touchscreen, Android 2.2, unlimited Wi-Fi usage on AT&T’s Wi-Fi Hot Spot network, and a 3.2-megapixel camera. AT&T announced new prepaid calling plans for GoPhone users. The new options will be available October 3 and will include an Unlimited Daily Talk and Text plan for just $2 per day. Under this plan, you'll only pay for days the phone is used. AT&T will also offer a monthly Unlimited Talk and Text plan with 200 MB of data for $75 per month. Under the $60/month plan, users get unlimited talk, text, instant messaging, and video messaging to anyone within the U.S. The plan also offers unlimited texting, IM, picture, and video messaging to anyone in Mexico, Canada, and more than 100 other countries.
