For users of the now defunct Google Reader service, Flipboard was supposed to serve as a saving grace of sorts by offering back in March to swoop in and automatically migrate their feeds. All a user had to do was create a Flipboard account and then sign into their Google Reader account via Flipboard prior to its closing. All good things eventually come to an end, and for the thousands of people who used Google Reader, the search giant's RSS reader was indeed a good thing. You'll notice we're referring to Google Reader in the past tense. We're jumping the gun by a few hours, but by the end of the day, Google will pull the plug on its RSS reader, rendering the service officially dead. Google dropped a bombshell on Google Reader users last week by announcing plans to shutter the RSS service on July 1, 2013, giving them just over three months to find an alternative. Many have already flocked to Feedly -- half a million in just a few days, in fact -- and Digg will make a pitch for its own upcoming RSS reader, but what if Google Reader didn't have to shut down?
