Numbers from Jon Peddie Research on the current state of the graphics market point to Nvidia as the big winner of Q3 2012, against both Intel and AMD. Intel's share of desktop and notebook sales both dropped roughly 8%, while AMD took a much smaller hit in desktops (2%) and a far greater hit in notebooks, sliding a whopping 17%. For Sunnyvale, the bad news doesn't stop there. JPR reports that quarter-on-quarter sales of desktop APUs fell 30%, notebook APUs slid 4.7%, and overall PC graphics shipments were down 10.7%. When Nvidia launched the consumer-oriented GK104 earlier this year, the company made it clear that the enthusiast-oriented GPU was the first iteration of a two-GPU strategy. K20, we were told, would launch later in the year, with certain features aimed at accelerating supercomputing and HPC workloads. Today, Nvidia is taking the wraps off that second GPU. As expected, it's a monster; the Nvidia K20, based on the GK110 GPU weighs in at 7.1B transistors, double the GK104's 3.54B.   GK110 keeps Kepler's basic SMX structure. At GTC 2012 today, Nvidia disclosed some details on its upcoming GPU, GK110 -- the beast that will power the GK20 Tesla chip and possibly an option or two at the very highest end of the consumer market. A new white paper published by Moore Insights & Strategy also disclosed some facts on the company's cloud gaming strategy in a more coherent fashion than the game demo we saw yesterday. Nvidia's GPU Technology Conference (GTC) kicked off this afternoon with company CEO Jen-Hsun Huang delivering the signature keynote. Nvidia typically uses the keynote to announce new projects, technologies, and initiatives, or to demonstrate new architectures, but today's event was something of a let-down. The event started off positively enough with a discussion of the GTX 690 and some performance highlights from the GK104 (Kepler's) debut. Today at the GeForce LAN taking place in Shanghai, NVIDIA’s CEO Jen Hsun Huang unveiled the company’s upcoming dual-GPU powered, flagship graphics card, the GeForce GTX 690. The GeForce GTX 690 will feature a pair of fully-functional GK104 “Kepler” GPUs. If you recall, the GK104 is the chip powering the excellent GeForce GTX 680, which debuted just last month. On the upcoming GeForce GTX 690, each of the GK104 GPUs will also be paired to its own 2GB of memory (4GB total) via a 256-bit interface, resulting in what is essentially GeForce GTX 680 SLI on a single card.
