It may too good to be true, but you can now earn digital currency while playing certain game titles. That's thanks to Razer, and its new program to reward avid gamers with 'zSILVER'. Supported titles include Overwatch, Dota 2, and League of Legends. zSILVER ties into Razer's payment system zVault, which lets gamers deposit funds into a virtual account to spend it across multiple titles. That particular currency is called zGOLD, so you can probably begin to sense the theme here. To put it simply: zGOLD requires real money for digital goods, while zSILVER requires digital currency for real goods.... Read more...
Futuremark has released a new segment of its popular 3DMark graphics testing suite called "API Overhead". The goal is simple: establish which CPU+GPU+API combination offers the best possible performance. Whether it's DirectX 12 or Vulkan, one thing the test can prove is that most other APIs, such as DirectX 11, are slugs in comparison. Futuremark's API Overhead test features a simple scene of blocks that get built to create the illusion of buildings. More of these buildings will be built in the time allotted depending on overall performance. The test is capped at 30 FPS for this reason: framerate... Read more...
If you were just thinking that Facebook wasn't already addictive enough, don't fret: there's more feature goodness en route. Last year, the world's largest social network released Facebook Live, a simple feature that let people stream to their friends' lists on-the-fly, regardless of where they are located (provided there is Internet access, of course). How often you see this feature used will largely depend on your particular friends list, but overall, the feature has proven overwhelmingly popular. Now, that functionality is coming to the desktop (and notebooks), with a few additional tricks up... Read more...
When we first wrote about Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night about two years ago, the game had become an instant Kickstarter success. But even at that time, we did not foresee the game's true potential. After funding completed, the project received a staggering $5.5 million, a huge leap over the requested $500,000. There are a couple of good reasons for why Bloodstained performed so well with crowdsourcing. For starters, it is in effect a spiritual successor to the Castlevania series, and perhaps even more notable is the fact that Koji Igarashi is the man behind it. Igarashi, also known... Read more...
Somewhere in a parallel universe, Nintendo's hybrid Switch console is running a custom version of Cyanogen OS, the now discontinued open-source operating system that has been forked into LineageOS. In this parallel universe, the OS lives on as founder Steve Kondik and and former CEO Kirk McMaster laugh about how CyanogenOS almost failed before Nintendo saved the day. Unfortunately for everyone who was involved with CyanogenOS, in the universe we live in, McMaster told Nintendo to "stick it" when the company inquired about using the OS to power its then-upcoming Switch. "In the early days of Cyanogen... Read more...
Following years of anticipation, BioWare's latest epic, Mass Effect: Andromeda, has just launched. As with all Mass Effect games, Andromeda is ambitious, complex, and rewarding, so expect to sink dozens of hours into it at the very least. Andromeda marks a brand-new chapter for the Mass Effect series, with this game's story mostly disjointed from the previous entries in the series. That was to be expected, as the ending of Mass Effect 3 painted storytellers into a corner. If you haven't played the previous games, and are thus worried about diving into this one first, don't worry. This is a fresh... Read more...
Members of the Xbox Insider program have spoken out about certain features they would like to see Microsoft implement and lo and behold, the Redmond outfit is responding to the feedback. Over the course of the next few weeks, Xbox Insiders will see a handful of new features they requested, including the ability to filter game libraries by platform (Xbox One and Xbox 360). "Gamers are at the center of everything we do at Xbox – we value your opinions and want you to help evolve the Xbox experience. Over the past few months, we’ve released brand new features to Insiders including Beam broadcasting... Read more...
While much of the emphasis involving game development these days seems to revolve around DirectX 12, the competing Vulkan API has been lurking in the shadows, ready to strike at a moment's notice. Up to this point, there hasn't been a deluge of Vulkan-powered titles available, with DOOM, Dota 2, and The Talos Principle being the the most high-profile offerings. Soon, a massive addition is going join that list by way of Cloud Imperium Games' Star Citizen. This case is a bit different than most, though, because CIG doesn't just plan to support Vulkan, it plans to only support Vulkan.... Read more...
It appears that Nintendo was once again caught off guard by the demand for a new game console, only this time the company is planning to amp up production in a big way. More specifically, Nintendo has told its suppliers to produce twice as many hybrid Switch consoles than originally ordered, as it has been flying off of store shelves just as fast as retailers can stock them.People who have supposedly been briefed on the matter told The Wall Street Journal that Nintendo has ordered 16 million Switch consoles, or possibly even more, for its fiscal year starting April 2017. That is double its previous... Read more...
Ryzen is here and it is giving Intel's Core series a run for its money, except in 1080p gaming in some instances (for now). AMD has said on multiple occasions that gaming performance will improve in time as developers start leveraging Ryzen's architecture and features. However, in the meantime, there are some things you can do to ensure you're getting the most out of AMD's latest processors. Some of the following information comes straight from the good folks at AMD, while other tib-bits are based on our experience with the Ryzen platform thus far. Let's get started. Update, Update, UpdateOne of... Read more...
Nintendo had set an ambitious goal of selling 2 million hybrid Switch consoles by the end of March, and it is looking like it will get there with ease. Having launched just two weeks ago, unofficial data suggests Nintendo has already sold 1.5 million Switch consoles, including 500,000 units in the United States and 360,000 in Japan. It's said that Europe is not that far behind—another 85,000 units have been sold in the U.K. and 110,000 in France. Those figures are based on tracking data from SuperData. They are largely attached to the first week of sales, so the actual number will be even higher... Read more...
There has always been a parallel between building and modding performance PCs and tuning muscle cars, both of which revolve around squeezing every ounce of power and speed available out of a careful selection of parts, a practice that Maingear helped spread to a wider audience. Maingear took an obsession enjoyed by a niche crowd of overclockers and modders and turned it into a full-fledged business that's now going on 15 years strong. That is not to say Maingear was the first boutique builder on the block. Far from it. However, it might be the only vendor whose founder, Wallace Santos, actually... Read more...
If you were to guess that the Nintendo Switch would make a big splash at this weekend's PAX East 2017, held in the sporting city of Boston, you'd be absolutely correct. However, considering that big N's latest console just dropped a week ago, that's no real surprise, perhaps. HotHardware's fearless leader, Dave Altavilla, as well as our own security guru Chris Goetting and tech news and reviews editor Brittany Goetting (a dynamic duo for sure), hit up the PAX show floor and found that Nintendo was in fact drawing some big crowds. Despite that, they managed to get some hands-on time with the Switch... Read more...
