Android 5.0 Lollipop was officially rolled out in early October and smartphone OEMs are already pushing out the major operating system update to their newest smartphones. Google’s Nexus devices have been graced with Lollipop goodness and Motorola, which had close ties to Google before being bought by Lenovo, has updated a number of its devices to Lollipop.  We already knew that Samsung has plans in place to bring Lollipop to its 2014-model smartphones like the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4, but what is extremely surprising is that the South Korean electronics giant is going all the way back... Remember Tizen, the Linux-based mobile operating system that's backed by Samsung and Intel, among others? There hasn't been much noise about Tizen lately, but rest assured, if you're hoping for another player in the mobile software space, Samsung still has plans of launching Tizen-based handsets later this year. Yoon Han-kil, senior vice president of Samsung's product strategy, says the company is planning to introduce at least two Tizen smartphones in the second quarter of this year. How the market reacts remains to be seen, but ultimately Samsung hopes to build an entire ecosystem around Tizen... Read more...
Depending on who you ask, Samsung's Galaxy S5 is the best Android smartphone (or smartphone, period) on the planet (Apple and HTC would both object). At the very least, it's in the discussion, as it should be when you consider the spec sheet. Far less impressive, however, is how difficult the Galaxy S5 is to repair on your own. Samsung's Galaxy S5 was the latest device to receive iFixIt's teardown treatment. Things started off well enough -- removing the backplate turned out to be "easier than peeling a banana," with no tools needed, just an opposable thumb. Once removed, users have easy access... Imagine plugging your fully depleted smartphone into its charger, waiting a mere 30 seconds, and then having it fully recharged again. Sounds far fetched, doesn't it? That's what makes StoreDot Ltd.'s technology so jaw dropping -- the concept is far fetched, yet it's much closer to becoming a reality than you might think. In fact, it's already here, sort of. No, you can't waltz into Walmart's electronics section and pick up some super charging device that will juice your HTC One in half a minute. However, StoreDot did build a prototype charger for Samsung's Galaxy S4 smartphone. Because seeing... Read more...
Smartphone makers may have learned an important lesson -- don't try to pull a fast one in Futuremark's 3DMark benchmark, because if you're caught, Futuremark will make a public spectacle out of banning your product. This happened last November when Futuremark delisted several Samsung and HTC handsets for breaking benchmarking rules, stripping them of their rank and scores. That must have resonated with Samsung, because two of its devices have been unbanned following a software update. According to Futuremark, both the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 now play by the rules as a result of an Android... Read more...
Considering just how much we all rely on smartphones every day, they’re shockingly fragile. All it takes is one quick drop or spilled drink to end in disaster for your expensive gadget. For as quickly as phone technology is advancing, durability for many smartphones has remained a problem. That’s where Samsung hopes to make some waves with their latest handset, the Galaxy S4 Active. The formula is simple: take the tried and true Galaxy S4, make a few tweaks here and there to ruggedize it and you have the Galaxy S4 Active. It’s a slight bit thicker and heavier and the rear has... Though Samsung has yet to release an official statement, it's being reported in a Korean newspaper that the company has now sold 20 million Galaxy S4 devices in the past two months since launch. If true, it would be an impressive feat and represent a doubling of sales since just over a month ago when Samsung announced it had shipped 10 million handsets. The Galaxy S4 is clearly the most popular Android handset out there right now, but is it the most popular smartphone? Based strictly from the sales figures, the answer would be no, as that distinction still belongs to the iPhone. Specifically, it... Read more...
Good news, Jay-Z fans. The hip-hop artist and part owner of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets is back with a new album titled "Magna Carta Holy Grail." It's due to release on July 4, 2014, and it will feature various artists such as Drake, Nas, and Justin Timberlake, all of whom have been working on the album. As a special treat to certain Galaxy owners, Samsung is giving away a million copies of the album three days before the album's launch. "To be eligible, a user must download the Magna Carta app that will be released on June 24 from the Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4, and the Galaxy Note II and in addition... Read more...
It's getting to be a little tough keeping up with all of Samsung's Galaxy devices, even those among the same family. To wit, there's there's the Galaxy S4 (Samsung's flagship smartphone), Galaxy S4 mini (a phone for budget shoppers), Galaxy S4 Active (a rugged smartphone), and Galaxy S4 zoom (hybrid camera/smartphone) -- phew! Soon you'll be able to add to the growing list of Galaxy S4 devices a new model smartphone with faster download speeds. Samsung's working on a special version of the Galaxy S4 that will use LTE-Advanced 4G technology. The big benefit of LTE-Advanced is that it offers data... Read more...
As we've seen time and again, investors are a fickle bunch, and skittish too. Lest we need reminding of that, it's being reported that shares of Samsung in Seoul have fallen more than they have in the past nine months, and it's all because JPMorgan Chase & Co. noticed a slowdown in Galaxy S4 sales. So began the domino effect, which led to JPMorgan cutting profit estimates for Samsung, and that in turn resulted in Samsung's share price dropping 6.2 percent, the steepest decline since August 27, 2012. That might not sound like much, but it was enough to drop Samsung's market capitalization by... Read more...
Exclusive deals can leave competitors red with rage, and so it's with a touch of irony that AT&T, once the exclusive carry of Apple's iPhone device, hammered out an agreement with Samsung to be the only wireless carrier offering its flagship Galaxy S4 device in Aurora Red. The new color with 16GB of built-in storage will be available to pre-order from AT&T's online and offline locations starting tomorrow, May 24th, for $200 with a two-year service agreement. It will land in stores on June 14th, just over three weeks from now. Other than the color scheme, which we have to admit looks quite... Read more...
Unofficially speaking, Samsung's Galaxy S4 device boarded a rocket ship and blasted off to four million shipments in just five days, qualifying it as the South Korean handset maker's fastest-selling smartphone to date. Why unofficially? Well, news of the spectacular shipment numbers comes from The Chosun Ilbo, a daily news site in Korea, rather than from an official Samsung press release. The news site does, however, quote an un-named Samsung executive as saying, " As of the end of April, we supplied four million Galaxy S4 handsets to telecommunications operators around the world." Assuming the... Read more...
