The question no longer seems to be whether or not Valve will release a Linux-based console of its own -- the so-called Steam Box -- but when will it debut? Based on some comments Valve co-founder Gabe Newell made during a keynote at LinuxCon 2013, the company could launch a Steam Box as early as next week, or at least offer up some additional information about its hardware plans. Newell promised to share "the hardware opportunities we see for bringing Linux into the living room" very soon, perhaps next week. While that could simply mean more lip service about PC prototypes by third party manufacturers... Read more...
Gabe Newell and Rob Pardo aren't the only people unhappy with Windows 8 and its potential impact on gaming. GamesIndustry.biz has conducted an informal survey of its own and found that a number of people in the industry are concerned about what Windows 8 will mean for gaming. The concerns are also more intelligent than Newell's ramble on falling PC margins. Dean Hall, the creator of the popular ARMA II mod DayZ, states: ""PC Games have always been gamers' games, edgy and adapting fast...  I don't think simplicity inherently means something is better, and this is the concern I think many people... Valve founder Gabe Newell had a conversation with VentureBeat recently in which the company CEO dropped some rather odd predictions concerning the future of the PC market. Newell took time out of his busy day spent rolling around naked on heaps of money and thinking of things to do besides Half Life: Episode 3 to share his opinion on Windows 8. Here's the exchange as recorded by VB reporter Dean Takahashi: Q:What are some of the projects you’re working on? A: [W]e’re trying to make sure that Linux thrives. Our perception is that one of the big problems holding Linux back is the absence... Read more...
Gabe Newell, head of Valve, has begun emailing Steam users today to let them know he and his company continue to investigate last year's security breach in which hackers vandalized Steam's forums. He also wants to give users a heads up that a backup file containing encrypted credit card details and other personal information was likely stolen. The email in its entirety reads: Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users: We continue our investigation of last year's intrusion with the help of outside security experts. In my last note about this, I described how intruders had accessed our Steam database... Read more...
If you've been around long enough, you'll remember that there actually was a fairly large gaming market brewing for Apple at one point in time, but somewhere along the way things went sour and the Mac went a long time with a very limited selection of titles.  That's slowly changing, especially with developers like Blizzard and even Electronic Arts throwing their weight behind OS X.What about Valve, a company that seems to have the Midas Touch when it comes to unbelievably great games?  Here's an interesting question posed to Gabe Newell:“Kikizo: People keep asking you about a potential...
