We thought it might be nice to have a quick rundown of some of the best apps that are free, open source, and cross-platform. Experienced users may find fault with us for leaving out their favorite app, but hopefully they will agree that the ones we’ve picked here are deserving of recognition. It's been a busy week for Microsoft. The Redmond software giant rolled out its much anticipated Xbox Live Dashboard update with a brand new look and fancy new features like voice controlled navigation, and it also launched an iOS app as well as an app for Windows Phone 7 users. From June 13 - 16, 2011, the first AMD Fusion Developer Summit, or AFDS, is being held at the Maydenbauer Center in Bellevue, Washington. While it's not hard to find free antivirus software for Macs (ClamXAV has been at it for years) by all accounts this is the first commercial grade tool available for nada. The personal navigation device market just got a bit more competitive. Following in Google's footsteps of offering free navigation to users of Motorola's DROID smartphone, Nokia recently announced its own plans to begin offering free map updates and navigation services to smartphone users. As Jukka Hosio, director of Nokia's services marketing, told a press conference in Helsinki, "We are offering global car and pedestrian navigation in 74 countries, in 46 languages ... Just over five months after the browser first entered public testing with an alpha release, Mozilla released Firefox 3.6. Although we had previously heard about delays for the latest version of this popular browser, the actual delay was much shorter than some had expected. So what will you get with Firefox 3.6? Hearing that "someone is working on it" is one thing, but now the home of the Golden Arches (and those "all white meat chicken nuggets) has finally done the deed. No, we're not talking about swapping out those juicy, all-beef patties for veggie slabs. We're talking about in-house Wi-Fi, and lots of it. Making good on a promise it made earlier in the year, McDonald's has rolled out free in-store Wi-Fi in "most" of its US stores.
