For many fledgling companies, consolidation becomes necessary after a period of, quite frankly, throwing anything and everything against a wall to see what sticks. For Foursquare, the opposite's happening. The check-in app is splitting into two apps, with "Swarm" being introduced as a companion to Foursquare, which will remain around as a slimmed-down app. The purpose of Swarm is to quickly and easily see where your friends are, share what you're up, and see if anyone around is up for meeting later. Swarm will be available on iOS and Android in the coming weeks, and soon after on Windows Phone.... Read more...
Microsoft is reportedly interested in investing in Foursquare, a location-based social networking service for mobile devices that lets users "check in" at various places. However, Microsoft isn't the only that's shown interest in an equity stake, as there's at least one other firm that wants a slice of Foursquare's pie. That company is American Express. Citing "people with knowledge of the discussions," Bloomberg says the two firms have no interest at this point in entering into a joint bid, leaving the two to compete with each other for an investment in the social networking service. Foursquare... Read more...
Foursquare released an update for its iOS and Android apps that enables one of the company's most requested features—the ability to check your friends into places when you're out together. Last year, the company launched a feature known as mentions which gives users the ability to tag or mention friends in a post. Since the launch, Foursquare has noticed over 90% of the mentions include someone else. When using Foursquare, you can now tap the "I'm with…" button to add your friends while checking into a location. Your friends will receive a notification asking for permission to check... Microsoft is still playing a game of catch-up when it comes to providing users with top-tier apps that iOS and Android users have had access to for months, but it's more than just availability. It's about app quality, and Microsoft is trying to bolster that by working with its major partners. Foursquare is a huge app name, and while the company's app has long since been around on Windows Phone, it's a pretty poor version. Until now. The newest build was just unleashed this week, with version 3.0 adding a lot of new features. Users can now pin people and venues to the Start screen, see notifications... Read more...
As the world grows more mobile and more connected, users are increasingly relying on things like geolocation apps in order to spot great / recommended venues nearby. And Foursquare knows it. As one of the top 'check-in' apps in the world, the company is updating its Android client this week with three major changes. First, it's making it easier to find places nearby with the Explore feature. Foursquare has built a moother search experience and moved Explore to the top of the home screen to make it easy to quickly find a place. Tap the search bar to find “nachos,” “Mexican,”... Users have long felt some unease towards Facebook and its furtive privacy settings, and that feeling is about to grow as Facebook appears ready to launch a smartphone app that will track users’ locations. Bloomberg reports that the app would run in the background on a device even when the app isn’t open and would be designed to not only track where your friends are, but also deliver location-relevant ads, deals, and promotions. The knee-jerk reaction here is one of privacy-violating horror--all of your Facebook friends can just...track you? That’s not to mention the discomfort... Read more...
Now that Foursquare is all grown up, boasting some 30 million members, the socially-minded check-in tool is adding some tender, loving care to its policies to usher in the new year. After the massive backlash against Instagram's haphazard terms-of-service update, it sure feels as if every app and startup is now being ultra cautious with how these types of things are handled. For Foursquare, the company has a few changes that'll go into effect on 1/28/13. For starters, it'll be showing your full name throughout the app, regardless of which platform you're using. Foursquare sometimes shows your full... Read more...

If it isn't Twitter, it's Facebook, and if it's not Facebook, it's Google+, and if it isn't that, it's probably Foursquare. There's too many social networks to count these days, but the one that has become famous for showcasing where people are at any given time is about to expand to new platforms. Starting now, the 600+ million Symbian S40 owners around the globe can download a "hugely improved" version of Fouraquare, which adds an open API, new features and availability in more nations than ever before. Included in this build: Nokia Maps for Series 40, enhanced Tips, nearby Specials, Explore,... Read more...
It's beginning to look like this right here is the future of social networking. While it all started as a way to keep in touch with friends in rapid fashion, it's quickly evolving into something more. Groupon is a good example of this, and now Virgin America is taking things to another level as well. The new airline has just become the first airline to offer frequent flier points for location-based "virtual check-ins." Talk about a new way to keep customers coming back. The airline has always been one to embrace technology, with fantastic rear-seat entertainment options and in-flight Wi-Fi for... Read more...
