In the mobile market, 2013 will be the year that smartphone shipments reached a tipping point where they beat out feature phone shipments for the first time--just barely. According to numbers from the IDC, smartphones accounted for just under 42% of all mobile phone shipments in 2012, and that number will climb to about 50.1% in 2013. The IDC only expects feature phones to diminish from here on out, with shipments dwindling every year until they reach about a third of all mobile phone shipments in 2017 (which is as far out as the firm has projected numbers). Nokia announced a pair of low-cost feature phones, the Asha 205 and 206, which are designed for sharing, long-lasting battery life, and smart data usage. The Asha 205 boasts a full QWERTY keyboard, a 2.4-inch (240x320) screen, and isolated navigation, Internet, email, and Facebook keys. The device runs on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 networks (although there’s a dual-SIM variant), and it sports a Series 40 Alpha UI, 0.3MP camera, 10MB of memory (up to 32GB with a microSD card), Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, GPRS/EDGE connectivity, and a 3.5mm AV jack.
