At Embedded Systems Conference today, AMD announced a pair of completely revamped platforms for this highly important, but oft overlooked, market sector. The two new ones are the compact ASB2 platform and the high-performance AM3 platform, both of which promise various combos of power and performance with up to 74% improvement in performance-per-watt over previous generations. AMD’s new embedded platforms consist of chipset and graphics solutions... Read more...
Intel has announced the completion of its bid to buy Wind River Systems just five weeks after making the deal public. Wind River is known for its embedded software products, and is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of the CPU manufacturer. When it announced the deal back in early June, Intel emphasized that the deal would "become part of Intel's strategy to grow its processor and software presence outside the traditional PC and server market segments into embedded systems and mobile handheld devices."At a price of one billion dollars, the Wind River acquisition won't stretch Intel's coffers, but it's... Not sure if you've noticed, but MSI is a diverse company. Somehow or another, it manages to produce potent gaming notebooks, slim ultraportables and machines like the one pictured below -- a small form factor PC designed for tight applications such as digital signage, kiosks, gaming and thin clients. The MS-9A08 is hailed as an embedded system and can be equipped with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad or Core 2 Quad processor.Built around the Intel GM45 chipset, the little black box includes GMAX4500 HD graphics and supports DirectX 10 as well as Blu-ray video playback. As for ports, you'll find... Read more...
If you thought Shuttle's idea of "small form factor" was small, wait until you wrap your mind around this. Today, VIA has introduced the first Pico-ITX fanless embedded box computer with its AMOS-3000. The hand-sized computer was designed to handle industrial environments, but this could also be tweaked in order to fit within a vehicle, a wall, rack, etc. In other words, with a box this tiny, your options are close to limitless. The unit is also VIA's very first embedded box computer of any kind, and it's based on the company's EPIA-P700 Pico-ITX board. The external chassis is comprised of heavy-duty... Read more...
While Craig Barrett delivered a rather non-technical, but socially-charged keynote earlier in the day, Pat Gelsinger's (Intel Senior Vice President and General Manager, Digital Enterprise Group) keynote address by contrast was all about the tech.Gelsinger envisions tomorrow's Internet as fully pervasive. The Internet will touch any device that communicates. As processors continue to become increasingly power efficient and faster, they will become more scalable and will be utilized in more products and platforms--including those that perhaps we are not used to thinking as traditionally Internet...
