If you thought the Pentium name was dead, think again. We've just posted a new article here at HotHardware in which we evaluate the performance, power consumption, and overclockability of Intel's brand-new Pentium E2140 dual-core processor. This chip is a derivative of the 'Conroe' core used in the Core 2 Duo family of processors, but with a smaller cache and lower FSB and core frequencies.  At under $100, it proved to be a solid value, especially after we overclocked it to almost 3GHz using the stock air-cooler. Intel has spent millions making their "Core" brand synonymous with high performance processing. In these days of the Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, and Core 2 Extreme, it’s pretty easy to find a Core microarchitecture-based processor to match nearly any possible price point. The performance levels of the Core 2 product lineup have been so dominating that Intel really didn’t have to spend a penny if they didn’t want to, although big time marketing campaigns are good for converting those who just want the latest and greatest and don’t necessarily read enthusiast sites like ours here. Back in January at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, Intel was showing off a rig in their booth dubbed the "V8". It was essentially a dual-socket workstation platform outfitted with a pair of quad-core Xeon processors for a total of eight cores - hence the 'V8'. In their demo, Intel ran the CPU benchmark built into 3DMark06 and as was evident in the signage over the rig, proudly boasted that it was capable of a CPU score of 6,089 points.  Today we've actually got the parts in house to assemble a similar rig, but ours is configured with considerably more powerful hardware...... Graphics processors are, and have always been, extremely parallel in nature. This sentiment has been expressed time and time again by various GPU architects from all of the major graphics chip designers. If you want additional performance, in the vast majority of cases, you can gain it by adding on more rendering pipelines or a second (identical) graphics processing unit. Graphics applications and games scale very well with additional rendering power under the hood, as shown by both Nvidia's SLI and ATI's Crossfire technologies, which can be traced all the way back to the 3DFX Voodoo2, which was... In early November of last year, NVIDIA unveiled their successor to the nForce 5, the nForce 600 series. The starting line-up included three solutions supporting Intel's Core 2 processor, each aimed at a different segment of the market and each with a different price point. The most expensive chipset in the series, the high-end 680i SLI provided a host of new features including dual X16 SLI support with a third X8 PCI-E slot. Next comes the 650i SLI, which lacks many of the 680i's fancier features like dual x16 SLI support, but makes up for it with a significantly lower price point. Finally at the... Read more...

Marco and I are just back from CES and while we're a little weary from all the walking and a red-eye flight from hell back to the east coast, we're on the mend, thankfully.   We had some behind-close-doors time with the folks at Sapphire and got to take a look at some of their new products not yet released to market.  One that caught our particular interest was their dual GPU Radeon X1950 Pro Dual card that utilizes a pair of X1950 Pro GPUs on a single card CrossFire setup.  Check it out.  Though it is a monster design, it's pretty impressive.   ... While the format wars rage on, many different solutions are being proposed. The latest is a disk that Time Warner will announce next week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Total HD movies will carry movies that can be played on high-definition DVD players that use technology backed by Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray format, as well as players using Toshiba Corp.-backed HD-DVD format. The competing formats have been blamed for hindering sales of high-definition movies and players, with consumers recalling the bruising war between Sony Corp.'s... Read more...
