Motorola and Verizon Wireless jointly announced today that the Droid Bionic will be made available on September 8th, and it will be the first Verizon Wireless smartphone to combine 4G LTE with a dual-core 1GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 4.3" qHD high-res display. The phone is also introducing ZumoCast, an application that lets customers bring their digital world of videos, music, pictures and documents stored on their computers to their handset via remote access. Furthermore, it'll support a Webtop laptop-dock accessory ($300!), much like the Atrix on AT&T. The Bionic will ship with a Mobile Hotspot... Read more...
Last Friday, AT&T gave notice that it would henceforth take steps to block unauthorized tethering. For those who aren't familiar with the term, "tethering" is the practice of using a cell phone's data link to provide wireless service to a desktop or laptop. Now, Verizon is evidently following suit. Customers who have previously had no trouble using tethering on jailbroken devices are reportedly being redirected to Verizon's advertising page for tethered data plans. AT&T and Verizon have both justified their moves by noting that they don't prevent customers from tethering--they simply charge... Read more...
Prior to its launch, Motorola's Xoom tablet was touted as the first of the iPad killers, with features and capabilities the iPad lacked as well as a brand-new version of Android codenamed Honeycomb. Once the tablet hit shelves, it was clear that Motorola had rushed production in a bid to beat the iPad 2 to market. At launch, the Xoom's Wi-Fi variant was nowhere in sight, Flash support (a much-touted feature) was absent, the advertised 4G upgrade capability wasn't scheduled to appear before September, and the microSD slot didn't actually work. Google later came out and admitted that it had... Read more...
In April, we learned that Motorola's hot new Droid Bionic smartphone for Verizon Wireless might not be available as early as initially hoped. At that time, all estimates pointed to a summer launch. Now, summer is in full swing and sure enough, Verizon Wireless has launched a special sign-up page for the Droid Bionic. Although we still don’t know when the phone will actually make its debut, the fact that Verizon Wireless is starting to promote the phone is a good sign that the phone should be launching soon. By entering your email address on the Droid Bionic sign-up page, Verizon Wireless... Read more...

The Droid Bionic has been off the radar for some, pulled for what were cited as undisclosed "enhancements." While that sounded like some changes in the internal hardware specs and software, it appears that the Bionic is getting some exterior changes, too. The latest reports indicate that the Droid Bionic will be getting a 4.5-inch (up from 4.3-inch) qHD screen. It will come with an 8MP rear-facing camera + an undisclosed resolution front-facing camera, support 1080P HD video, and have a 1750mAh battery. In addition, the images show off a laptop dock. Motorola has said for some time that it was... Read more...

At the end of last month, Verizon Wireless experienced an outage with its 4G LTE network that caused the wireless carrier to postpone the launch of the latest member of the Droid family, the Droid Charge by Samsung. The Droid Charge is slated to be the second LTE smartphone in the Verizon Wireless lineup. Although Verizon Wireless fixed the issues with its LTE service, the Droid Charge is still unavailable. Currently, users can sign up to receive email updates about the availability and price of the Droid Charge. After signing up, Verizon Wireless says the phone is "coming soon." On May 3, Samsung... The Droid Charge by Samsung is the second 4G smartphone to come to Verizon's 4G LTE network. It has a gorgeous 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, an 8MP camera with flash and Samsung's slick custom skin for Android 2.2.  We're running this pocket rocket through its paces here in the HH Test Lab but we thought you'd like a quick glimpse of what the phone is made of and what it can do.  We're taking it to the city today, to grab some 4G LTE lightning in Beantown but in the meantime, we go hands-on here in our video review -- for your geek pleasure. The Charge is nice and light-weight, but has... Read more...
Verizon LTE services nationwide remain out, more than 24 hours after they first went offline. The company verified the outage on its Twitter account.  The service first went offline on Tuesday night. In addition, Verizon has previously said that LTE devices would switch to CDMA mode if they were in an area with no LTE coverage. In this case, HTC Thunderbolt users (the only handhelds currently on Verizon's network supporting LTE) are seeing 1X mode, not 3G, Verizon has admitted in a later Tweet. Voice on Thunderbolts is apparently working fine, but that should be no surprise. Verizon's current... Read more...
Verizon Wireless CFO Fran Shammo, speaking at a Morgan Stanley investor conference on Tuesday, March 1, let loose with the news that Verizon would be targeting mid-summer for an overhaul of its data plans, with tiered pricing coming. Naturally, that sounds like it will arrive right at the same time that the iPhone 5 does. Shammo said the following, explaining why they haven't changed to tiered pricing yet. It sounds like it was all about sucking in iPhone buyers, to be honest: Why did we do the unlimited $30 plan on the iPhone? Well, the reason we did that was we didn't really want to put up a... If it walks like a Droid Pro, smells like a Droid Pro, and looks like a Droid Pro...it must be a Droid Pro! Unless it's heading to Europe, and then it's the simpler Motorola Pro. Announced in Mobile World Congress (which just so happens to be in Europe), the new Motorola Pro is an Android-based phone with both a touch panel and a QWERTY keyboard. There's Froyo, a 1GHz processor, 2GB of internal storage space, an SD card slot, optional 3G hotspot functionality, and lots of business tools: QuickOffice pre-loaded and email support (Corporate Sync, Gmail, POP3/IMAP embedded, Push Email, Yahoo Mail).... Motorola recently made quite a splash with their cute, mysteriously non-descript tease of their upcoming Xoom tablet that they promised to unveil at CES 2011.  Alas we waited with baited breath and tonight the wait was finally over, with Motorola unveiling not only the Xoom tablet but a host of smartphones based on the Android platform. In addition, though not confirmed by the Motorola booth reps, we heard from the folks at NVIDIA that Tegra 2 is powering not only the Xoom tablet but also Mot's new Droid Bonic smartphone. If NVIDIA was waiting to hit paydirt with Tegra 2, it seems Q1 will... Read more...
