A few weeks back, AMD quietly released a couple of new graphics cards in the Radeon HD 5500 series. For a while there, starting with the Radeon HD 5870 in late September of last year, it seemed like AMD was releasing a new series of graphics cards aimed at different price points, practically every few weeks. Back in April, we first gave you a glimpse of the extreme Asus ARES dual-Radeon HD 5870 GPU powered graphics card, complete with some preliminary benchmarks. At the time, the specifications weren't quite finalized and there was little word about availability in the U.S., but the card's impressive configuration immediately piqued our interest. The ARES was, after all, a "true dual-Radeon HD 5870" CrossFire setup on a single PCB. When Intel announced its plans to develop a discrete graphics card capable of scaling from the consumer market to high-end GPGPU calculations,  it was met with a mixture of scorn, disbelief, interest, and curiosity. Unlike the GPUs at SIGGRAPH in 2008 (or any of the current ones, for that matter), Larrabee was a series of in-order x86 cores connected by a high-bandwidth bus. AMD revealed more information on its first Fusion-class product at ISSCC this week. The new chip will combine both a CPU and GPU on a single package, but don't use either nickname—AMD is  calling the new chip an "APU" or Application Processor Unit as part of its bid to shift product focus from the core components in a system to the tasks and workloads a system is capable of handling. Done properly, this could solve certain nomenclature confusions that have plagued the computer market from the very beginning, but we aren't holding our breath. AMD has launched a number of GPU's based on its Radeon 5000 series in recent months, but a last-minute problem with the ATI Radeon 5830 may force the company to delay the introduction of its latest chip. According to DigiTimes, a handful of 5830 cards have been throwing unspecified software errors due to an issue "related to circuits on the board." AMD declined to comment on the issue, other than to note that the 5830 is currently being validated and that there are no issues with any ATI GPUs currently on the market. AMD is rolling out two more graphics cards—the HD 5770 and 5750—that are designed to put the company's ATI Radeon technology in lower cost devices. Both cards support Microsoft's DirectX 11 technology which will arrive with the upcoming release of Windows 7 on October 22. The AMD GPUs offer more than 1 TeraFLOPS of compute power, support AMD's Eyefinity multiple display technology, and target lower-cost devices. The GPUs are built on 40nm technology. It was just over a year ago that ATI debuted its HD 4000 series of video cards, but it's rumored that the company will miss its stated one-year refresh cycle by several additional months. The problem, in this case, has nothing to do with the GPU's design, but is the result of continued 40nm yield problems at TSMC. The Taiwanese fabrication plant has been having trouble with its 40nm process for some time, with some analysts predicting the company's 40nm yields could be below 30 percent. AMD announced plans today to provide full support for Microsoft DirectX 11 and OpenCL to enable increased C/C++ cross platform programming efficiency, see the full press release below.
