Desktop replacement systems aren't for everyone. They're typically, big, heavy, and comparatively short on battery life, making them the polar opposites of Ultrabooks and other thin and light systems that last for hours on end. So why would anyone want one? For the sheer power, of course! Desktop replacement systems are big and bulky because they pack so much cutting edge hardware underneath the hood, and if you lug one to a LAN party, you're almost assured of having one of the fastest -- if not the fastest -- systems around. Only a handful of companies dabble in these types of notebooks, and Maingear... Read more...

The current trend in laptops is towards smaller, slimmer, and lighter devices, hence why Intel gave birth to the Ultrabook form factor. But if you think anything less than a full-fledged desktop replacement is for mobile wimps, Eurocom has a new system that might be right up your alley. It's the Panther 4.0, a beast of a system built around Intel's X79 chipset with Sandy Bridge-E platform. Eurocom's Panther 4.0 is a mobile workstation or a bad mutha-fragger, depending on how you configure it. The only thing slightly modest on it is the 17.3-inch display instead of going all out with an 18-inch... Read more...

There's no mistaking Origin PC's new EON17 notebook for exactly what it is: a full-on desktop replacement with more bells and whistles than, well, a bells and whistles store. Grab a hanky first -- not for you, but for the desktop system you're reading this on. The EON17 is everything you make it out to be. Don't have a budget to work with? In that case, it's worth mentioning you can deck out this desktop replacement with up an Intel Core i7 980X six-core processor,... Read more...
