Samsung on Tuesday announced that it is now mass producing what it considers the most advanced 4Gb (Gigabit) DDR3 memory based on a new 20nm manufacturing process technology. Using Samsung's innovations in manufacturing, the South Korean chip maker says it's been able to improve yields by more than 30 percent compared to 25nm DDR3, and more than double that of 30nm-class DDR3. Perhaps a sign that the times are changing, personal computers (PCs) during the second quarter of 2012 accounted for less than half of all DRAM shipments, the first time in a generation that this has happened, according to data by IHS iSuppli. PCs' share of DRAM shipments dipped to 49 percent, down from 50.2 percent in the first quarter. "The fall is notable, given that the share of PCs hasn’t dipped below 50 percent since the 1980s, when personal computers were a new product whose sales were rising at rapid clip," IHS iSuppli explains. According to reports, DRAM inventory is on the rise, and that could translate into cheaper memory kits or prebuilt PCs with more RAM in the not too distant future. A weak PC market combined with the impending release of Windows 8 has led to a slowdown in PC sales, leaving OEMs with a stockpile of DRAM. According to HWBot, the world record for memory overclocking has fallen again. Christian Ney, a Swiss overclocker, hit DDR3-3736MHz with a 4GB G.Skill RipjawZ DIMM. He used liquid nitrogen to keep the processor and memory cool, down to -197 degree C both at idle and under load. The screenshots of CPU-Z tell the tale. Another day, another monster memory kit. Super Talent announced the Quadra series of DDR3 memory, which is designed to complement Intel Core i7 six-core processors. The overclocked kits, which total 32GB (8 x 4GB DIMMs) are validated with the X79 chipset and are available in 1600MHz or 1866MHz.
