AMD has just announced a new processor that will sit atop the leaderboard when it comes to FM2+ processors. The new processor, the A10-7870K APU, is priced at a respectable $137 and will be available beginning June 2. To this point, most of the recently released, higher-end “off the shelf” network attached storage solutions targeted at small business or home users have features low-power Intel Atom processors. Thecus’ new, ultra-high-end N8900, however, boasts an Intel’s Core i3 processor and 8GB of DDR3 memory at its heart. You might recall that Intel toyed with the idea of "Upgrade Cards" for its Pentium G6951 processor around this time last year. For fifty bucks, you could buy one of these cards containing a software code that you would download from Intel's site, and just like that, your Pentium chip would suddenly have an additional 1MB of L3 cache to play with, along with Hyper-Threading enabled. Some scoffed at the idea of paying additional money for features already baked into their CPU, while others saw it as a cost-effective way to improve performance. Intel's marketing division has a long history of partnering with OEMs in order to jointly promote a product, but the company's most recent initiative could create blowback from unhappy customers. According to information unearthed this past weekend, Intel is quietly testing the concept of "upgradeable" CPUs. Instead of buying a physical CPU and going to through the hassle of installing it, customers who purchase one of these systems could optionally purchase an upgrade card (current price: $50). AMD always hosts an event in the shadow of Intel's Developer Forum, so it wasn't surprising to hear the company was demoing its upcoming Zacate processor this week. Zacate is the codename associated with AMD's 18W dual-core APU and will target the $500 notebook market. The second chip, Ontario, is a 9W APU that'll chase after Atom's business. When AMD released its second quarter financial results last month it didn't say much about server volumes or market share, save to note that its performance "met expectations." The major news of the call turned out to be the company's decision to pull Bobcat's launch into 2010 and push Llano into 2011, which defrayed most conversation on market share. If AMD's server sales were indeed within the company's expectations, it can only mean the company was expecting to be pummeled. Remember the MacBook Air? Yeah, it's been quite some time since Apple has made any mention of its only ultra-thin ultraportable machine, and after it made a huge splash a few years ago in terms of design, the company has really let it age. There haven't been too many spec upgrades along the way, and it seems as if the machine isn't a high priority for Apple at all. Toshiba's Singapore division recently launched a new Portégé notebook that features a Honeycomb Structure and Fresh Air Cooling Technology. Thanks to the new Honeycomb Structure beneath the palm rests and base of the laptop, the Portégé R700 is able to feature a light and durable magnesium alloy reinforced casing. 2010 isn't even halfway over, and already Intel is expanding their 2010 Core lineup. That's the Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 family, which is growing today in the run-up to Computex. Previously, the chips were reserved for high-end desktops. Eventually, a few multi-media and gaming notebooks took these CPUs in. Today, an even more power efficient group of computers will be calling the Core 2010 for duty, with an expansion into the Ultra-Thin laptop sector.
