Intel’s Core 2 Quad Q9300 has some rather large shoes to fill. This newly shipping, relatively low-cost quad-core processor from Intel is a replacement for their long-standing price to performance champ, the Core 2 Quad Q6600.  The Q6600 was the first quad-core in Intel’s arsenal which was actually affordable, and even today, it remains one of the best values on the market.  Not only is the Core 2 Quad Q6600 inexpensive for a quad-core CPU, but it is extremely overclockable and provides a significant amount of computing power for the dollar. Just in case you hopped right down to the news and missed the fresh link at the top of the page, we’re writing to let you all know that we have just posted a new article here at HotHardware in which we evaluate the features and performance of Intel’s recently released, Wolfdale-based Core 2 Duo E8500 processor.  The E8500 uses Intel’s 45nm Penryn derived Wolfdale core, with a 3.16GHz clock speed, 6MB of L2 cache, and support for SSEE4.1.  Overall, even in its stock configuration this processor was a strong performer, while consuming less power than Intel’s previous generation 65nm products. ... Intel fans have been patiently waiting for the company to release their lineup of refreshed Core 2 Duo and Quad products. Intel started hyping these revised components late last year, and they were expected to hit the market in January of this year. While Intel technically hit that date with the release of one 45nm component, it was the ultra-expensive Core 2 Extreme QX9650, which sells for over $1,000.   Intel started slowly leaking information about an ultra high-end enthusiast platform dubbed Skulltrail at right about the same time that AMD’s now defunct QuadFX platform was set to be released.  Over time we learned that Skulltrail, like QuadFX, would be a dual-socket platform that could accommodate a pair of Intel’s fastest quad-core processors, for a grand total of eight execution cores in one desktop system.  But other details regarding the platform were somewhat scarce to say the least. Thirty million transistors on the head of a pin.  Think about that for a minute.  Where on earth can you fit 30 million of anything in that amount of space?  It used to be that 30 million transistors was a good-sized chip.  These days, in a 45nm Hafnium-based High-K process, it almost seems like we (OK, OK, Intel...) can defy the laws of physics.  We're talking rocket science here people. This morning we have a performance preview of Intel's soon to be released Core 2 Extreme QX9770 quad-core processor.  Right on the heels of AMD's Phenom launch, Intel is seemingly going for the proverbial jugular.  At 3.2GHz and a blazing 1600MHz front side bus, the new high-end Core 2 Extreme chip should serve up a healthy shot of performance above and beyond what we've already seen from Intel's Yorkfield core.  Have a look for yourself...  ... It seems like Intel started talking about the Penryn core as soon as the Conroe core launched in the form of the first Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors.  Penryn was to be the next evolution in Intel’s Core microarchitecture and would be the foundation of a new class of mobile, desktop, and server processor built using the company’s advanced 45nm manufacturing process. Today at HotHardware, we have looked at two affordably priced Core 2 platforms based on the Intel P3x series chipset, to see if there were any major differences in terms of performance, features, and overclockability between the two.  Representing the P35 Express, we have the ECS P35T-A, which retails for a little over $100 USD. In addition, we have the new Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L representing the P31 Express. Intel’s latest chipset family, the P3x-series, can certainly be qualified as a hit thus far. While Intel P3x-series chipsets, like the mid-range P35 series and the budget-targeted P31 series, don’t sport any truly exciting new features in comparison to their previous generation counterparts, they’re showing themselves to be extremely reliable and very flexible thus far.
