We've heard rumors that Nintendo is working on new gaming hardware, and during a recent press conference, company president and CEO Satoru Iwata confirmed the new platform, though he stopped short of saying whether it will be a living room console or a handheld gaming system. The codename for the platform is "NX." It's not clear if Iwata intended all along to confirm that work has begun on NX, as the purpose of the press conference was to explain why Nintendo has decided to enter the smartphone gaming market through a partnership with DeNA, a player in the smartphone gaming space. He then went... Read more...
NVIDIA just wrapped up an event in San Francisco, where the Game Developers Conference (GDC) is currently underway. Look playa, you should never pay full price for an Xbox Live Gold membership, not when there's almost always a sale price to be had. Even Microsoft hawks its Xbox Live Gold subscriptions for a discount on occasion, like it's doing now -- for a limited time, you can purchase a 12-month Xbox Live Gold membership for $39.99 from the Microsoft Store. That's $20 off the regular price of $59.99 and represents the typical sale price that third-party vendors often mark these things down for. Every once in awhile you can find them for a few dollars less, and if you're lucky, you can snag one for about $30... Read more...
The idea of using Android as more than just a mobile OS isn't new. Some companies, like Acer, have released all-in-ones that have featured the OS, while others, such as ASUS, have tried to release notebooks that dual booted both Android and Windows. Apparently, people want Android on the desktop - or at least could, if it's done right. The folks behind Console OS are working towards that "done right" challenge, and so far, their offering looks quite appealing. In effect, Console OS is a do-it-yourself solution that will allow you to install Android to an x86 device, whether it be a desktop, notebook,... Read more...
Microsoft's Major Nelson announced that Xbox One gamers will be able to take screenshots on their console as part of the March update. This has consistently been one of the most requested features, and come next month, it's finally arriving on the Xbox One, or as early as tonight if you're part of the Xbox One Preview Program. To take advantage of the new feature, all you have to do is double tap the Xbox button on your controller and the console will capture the screen. You can then press Y to save the screenshot, or yell at the Kinect (if you have one) and say "Xbox Take a Screenshot" to capture... Read more...
When Sony decided to auction off the very first of a limited run of special 20th Anniversary PlayStation 4 consoles, it received a lot of attention, along with a bunch of bids. The highest came in at a little more than 15 million yen, or around $129,000 in U.S. currency. Well, it turns out the winning bidder may have been a bit overzealous -- for reasons unknown, the bidder backed out of the deal. The unfortunate thing about backing out of the deal is that the proceeds were to be donated to the Save the Children Japan charity, and $129,000 could go a long way. Fortunately,... Read more...
Depending on the neighborhood, $129,000 could buy you a nice house. But for a Japanese fellow looking to own a piece of gaming history, that's the sum he was willing to pay for a PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary console. The reason he paid the enormous sum versus the going rate of $1,500 to $2,000 on eBay is because this particular version is labeled No. 00001/12300. Sony held a special auction for the first of a limited run of retro themed PS4 consoles. There were only 12,300 of these consoles made, a number that represents the original PlayStation's December 3 (12/3) launch... Read more...
It's official, folks -- we can finally stop arguing over which is the superior game console, the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Quite frankly, it's a pointless debate, and it took a self-taught engineer to put the argument to rest, which he did by combining both game systems into a 22-inch laptop. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the "PlayBox," a gaming laptop that's equal parts Xbox One and PS4 rolled into one. The PlayBox wins the argument because it allows you to play games on either system, and when it comes down to it, the ability to play games is all that matters. Built for a "specific customer," the... Read more...

In the race to sell the most game consoles, Sony suffered a slight setback when Chinese officials asked that it make adjustments to its PlayStation 4 (PS4) system before launching it in China. Sony originally planned to release the PS4 in China on January 11, 2015 (this Sunday), but has now postponed the launch to a date that's yet to be determined. "The government asked us for final adjustments, which will take some time, so we decided to delay the launch date," said Kaede Bun, a spokeswoman for Sony. As for when the new launch date will be, Bun said Sony would offer up more details at a later... Read more...

We first caught wind on the Alienware Alpha in the lead-up to Valve’s Steam Box announcements, prior to the Consumer Electronics Show. If you’re unfamiliar with the Alienware Alpha, it is a sleek, small form factor gaming PC, designed specifically for gamers. Valve is not quite ready with Steam OS or the Steam Controller, so the whole Steam Box angle is on hold for now, but that didn’t stop Alienware from re-tooling a bit and shipping the Alpha with Windows 8.1 instead. There are a number of Alpha configurations currently available. The machines have a starting price of $549 with the entry-level... Read more...
Nintendo's famed Shigeru Miyamoto hinted that the Japanese game company is already looking ahead to its next major console release even though the Wii U is just a couple of years old. Nevertheless, it's also behind the technological curve compared to Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One, both of which were released in November of last year. In an interview with the Associated Press, Miyamoto said that it's focused on bringing more games to the Wii U in the coming year, but that multiple groups within the organization have also been brainstorming new hardware.Image Source: Flickr (Greg...
