Thin and light clients are all the rage these days, even in the desktop space -- from Intel's NUC to many diminutive Steam Machines, the idea from OEMs is that even mainstream buyers are going to adopt system form factors the size of playing cards. If true, it would explain the thinking behind Apacer's latest innovation -- a new style of DRAM that can mount M.2 drives or serial CompactFlash (CFast) cards with support for the SATA 3.0 interface. So, now that 4K HDTVs are hitting the production line, one has to wonder: where is all of that 4K content going to come from? No doubt, some of it will be upscaled 1080p content at first, but many motion pictures are already being shot natively in 4K. It's just a matter of time before even more content arrives that way, as well. But to do it properly, you need a capture card that can handle the extreme influx of all of that data. 4K shooting requires huge amounts of storage space, and also, a memory card with tons of bandwidth to handle all of the I/O transmissions. Secure Digital has a great deal of mindshare these days, and far more notebooks ship with integrated SD card readers than CF card readers. But that's not to say that CompactFlash is losing steam. CF has always been more of a "professional" format, used almost exclusively on higher-end DSLR cameras and rarely ever on lower-end point and shoot devices. Lexar is improving upon its Professional line of CompactFlash (CF) and Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) memory cards by adding larger CF cards and faster SDHC cards. The capacity of the Professional 300x CF cards has been increased to 32GB; Lexar's Professional 233x CF cards are now available in 16GB and 32GB capacities. In the SDHC realm, the Lexar Professional 133x SDHC card has achieved a Class 10 speed rating, enabling it to provide a minimum sustained write speed capability of 133x (20MB per second). Super Talent released a new compact digital storage product line, CFast storage cards. The CFast storage card uses a SATA interface to offer improved and unmatched write/read performance speeds. As you should guess from its name, the new card is an evolution of the traditional CompactFlash card.
