As we've mentioned previously, Marco has been working on a Storage Media Server build for a project showcase at Symantec's Security with Speed site.  The purpose of the site is an effort by Symantec to create awareness that their new Norton Security 2009 product has been completely engineered from the ground up with speed and low system resource utilization in mind.  As a side benefit to their campaign, the Security with Speed site is also a pretty good resource for multitude of PC tech info, including HotHardware's contribution to the Storage Media Server project that Marco has been... A 19-year-old has apparently committed suicide while filming himself on the online live-video streaming service Justin.TV. According to NewTeeVee, not only has the suicide been confirmed, but he was apparently egged on by commenters at both Justin.TV and BodyBuilding.com. Abraham K. Biggs killed himself on camera Wednesday night. His handle was CandyJunkie on the Bodybuilding.com forum and Feels Like Ecstasy on Justin.TV. According to reports, he posted a suicide note on the Bodybuilding.com forum, but strangely (suspiciously), that forum is down for "maintenance." The suicide note was cross-posted... Read more...

If you are a technophile, what's the first thing your wife / friend / relative does when they can't figure out something, or when there's a problem, no matter how small, technology-wise.  Yep, they come to you. Now, yes, most of us here are technophiles, but besides that a new Pew Internet & American Life Project study (.PDF) which focuses on "When Technology Fails," seems to show that youth and gender play a role in how confident a user will be in fixing a tech failure by themselves. And yes, besides the obvious stats they gathered about how many failures may have occurred, Pew Research... Read more...

AMD is revealing a new technology brand today to highlight some recent advances made in the company's stream and GPU computing initiatives.  The new brand is aptly named ATI Stream.ATI Stream is essentially a amalgamation of all of ATI's previous initiatives like Close To Metal (CTM), Compute Abstraction Layer (CAL), and Brook+ (AMD’s modified Brook open source compiler), encompassed under a single brand.  The goal, as NVIDIA has done to some degree with CUDA and PhysX, is to not only take ATI Stream mainstream, but to also better serve the enterprise... Many techs will agree: antivirus programs can be a hassle. Mostly, the issues tend to stem from slower performance and similar issues that result from using an antivirus program. Still, it’s a bit of a lesser of two evils deal: you can risk getting a virus, or you can deal with lags in performance. Usually, you can count on well-known antivirus programs to only touch malicious files, but this isn’t always the case.AVG, a free antivirus scanner, recently created problems for some of its users when it mistook user32.dll, a critical Windows component, for a container for the Trojan Horses PSW.Banker4.APSA... It was rumored earlier that AT&T and Apple were in discussions over tethering. And at the Web 2.0 Summit, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph De La Vega indicated in an interview with Michael Arrington that an official, AT&T sanctioned method of tethering (using the iPhone as a 3G modem) is on the coming "soon." There are already some tethering apps for jailbroken phones, such as PDANet, but nothing you can download from the App Store, at least not since NetShare was pulled from the store. It's unclear when AT&T will roll out the tethering service; some point in 2009 is the only vague indication... Read more...
