Intel is making a play for a bigger chunk of the mobile market, and although ARM says that it’s a generation ahead of Intel’s Atom (on smartphones, at least), Intel showed off its 22nm Silvermont microarchitecture and new Atom (Bay Trail) tablet platform and demonstrated a substantial generational performance increase. (Hit up our coverage of Silvermont/Bay Trail here.) Clover Trail and Clover Trail+ aren’t even a year old yet, but Bay Trail, which Intel says will be in consumer devices by the end of the year, blows them out of the water in terms of performance. In a live demo... Read more...
Although Samsung’s Galaxy Tab devices are generally very fine products, the sheer number of SKUs in the line make individual Tabs less interesting. However, there’s a rumor that the upcoming Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 will be packing an Intel chip instead of a homegrown Samsung Exynos or other mobile processor. According to Android Authority, a GLBenchmark test shows that model GT-P5210 (believed to be the model number for the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1) has an Intel Clovertrail chip inside, which the site says is the 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2560. Judging from the information, the Intel processor would be... Read more...
According to the Seattle Times, erstwhile mobile device maker i-mate has something amazing brewing: a 4.7-inch phone that runs a full version of Windows 8 Pro--not Windows Phone 8, mind you--and also docks into a station that includes a 27-inch monitor, a wired business-looking desktop phone, and a separate “auxiliary” 10.1-inch tablet. The phone, called the “Intelegent”, reportedly features an Intel Atom (Clover Trail) processor, 2GB of RAM, 64GB of onboard storage, 4G network connectivity, and up to 10 hours of talk time on a single battery charge. Windows RT or Windows 8 for ARM devices launched a couple weeks ago and today we have the very first Intel-driven Windows 8 tablet device to hit our labs, powered by Intel's latest low power Clover Trail Atom Z2760 SoC (System on Chip).  The Atom Z2760 is a new dual core chip from Intel with integrated engines for graphics, HD video encode and decode and a low power DDR2 DRAM controller.  Clover Trail, like Medfield for smartphones, marks Intel's latest effort to break into the exploding tablet market.  With Windows 8 finally launched, does Intel's new Atom architecture have what... When you consider Intel's competitive position in the desktop and notebook PC markets, one simple word comes to mind, "dominance."  Conversely, when it comes to tablets and smartphones, the landscape couldn't be more different. Intel's chief competitor on the desktop and PC side of the equation is AMD and it's obvious Intel is killing it there.  Intel's nemesis in tablets and smartphones? ARM, and ARM is killing it.  NVIDIA, Apple, Samsung, Motorola, Google, Lenovo, Toshiba are all building devices or silicon based on ARM technology and the list goes on... and on.  Recently,... At the Intel Developer Conference this week, Intel is expected to (among other things) offer up some insight into its mobile strategy going forward. For as omnipresent as the company is in the world of processors, the tablet market is one where the competition is particularly fierce. ARM, Qualcomm, TI, and Samsung, for example, all stand in the way. We knew that Intel was planning to establish a presence with upcoming tablets running the new Windows 8 operating system, but a job posting for the chipmaker looking for software architects to develop a tablet platform really says it all: The Intel...
