Once Intel announced their dual-core Celerons it was only a matter of time until AMD countered with dual-core Semprons.  The bad news is that they're mainly available in China at this time, but that could change in the future.  Here's the specs on the dual-core Sempron:“AMD Sempron 2100+ processors adopt a 65nm process, and have a core frequency of 1.8GHz. Get your tin foil hats on, this is one of those kinds of rumors.  As always we remind you to take all rumors with a grain of salt.We reported in the past that Sony was going to offload their Cell production and that Toshiba was a rumored buyer, but the deal seemed to be in limbo for several weeks.  Then major retailers and studios started pulling the plug on HD DVD without a whole lot of explanation.A few more weeks go by and Toshiba officially canned their disc format and Sony sets a price on the Cell operation: $835 million.  It's hard not to wonder if there is more here than meets... Verizon Wireless started a price war on Tuesday by announcing a $99.99 unlimited calling plan across the United States. “At an ISSCC session yesterday afternoon, IBM announced details of a smaller, lower-power version of the Cell BE processor that powers Sony's PlayStation 3. The Cell BE is currently fabricated on IBM's 65nm SOI process, but IBM will soon move the console chip onto the company's much-ballyhooed, next-generation 45nm high-k process.”The move to 45nm should offer a power savings of 40% as well as shrink the die area down another 34%.  The end result is chips that should run cooler and cost less once the manufacturing process has the inevitable kinks worked out.  That's a boon to gamers,... Well, Jack Bauer would like us to believe that nuclear terror is just around the corner, and with this system, we could just possibly prove it.Researchers at Purdue University are working with the state of Indiana to develop a system that would use a network of cell phones to detect and track radiation to help prevent terrorist attacks with radiological "dirty bombs" and nuclear weapons.Such a system could blanket the nation with millions of cell phones equipped with radiation sensors able to detect even light residues of radioactive material. Just like the rest of us nerds, Toshiba got to wondering what would happen if you put a Playstation 3 Cell processor into a laptop. They put one in one of their Qosimo G45 notebooks, which already sports an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU.  They've named the system the Spurs engine. It allows the laptop to react to user hand gestures; scan through all your video files for particular faces and sort them into thumbnail lists; allows you to take a picture of your face and digitally alter it in various ways in 3D; and maybe most interesting, lets you change standard-definition video into sweet, sweet, 1080p.... Toshiba and Sharp are fierce competitors. Both based in Japan, they manufacture and sell flatscreen LCD TVs, among many other things. They've decided to cooperate with one another, and have announced that Toshiba will purchase LCD panels over 32 inches from Sharp, and in turn Sharp will purchase chips for use in their TVs from Toshiba. Toshiba President Atsutoshi Nishida said the partnership will create a "win-win relationship" combining the strong LCDs of Sharp with the strong semiconductors of Toshiba.``To survive the tough competition, we need to be strong in both the key device of panels...
