Talk about a gut punch. Some users who took a leap of faith into Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform are reporting the first WP7 update has turned their groovy new smartphone into a shiny brick. Making the situation even tougher to swallow, this wasn't even a major software update, but a minor patch intended to "prepare the phones for updates in the future." Oops! Microsoft is aware of the issue and is advising those affected to take them back to the place of purchase and swap it for a new one. "At this time if the phone is bricked you need to exchange to (sic) phone unfortunately," @WinPhoneSupport... Read more...

Of the 1.4 million iPhones sold so far (of which 1,119,000 were sold in the quarter ending Sept. 30), Mr. Cook estimated that 250,000 were sold to people who wanted to unlock them from the AT&T network and use them with another carrier. He said that the bulk of those... Read more...
Apple warned that its latest update, 1.1.1, might disable some hacked, unlocked phones, but it appears there are cases of unhacked phones being bricked. It is not clear exactly why this is occurring, as Apple has yet to comment on the problems. But the rash of reports from those who have not unlocked or modified their phones indicates that whatever the Cupertino company is doing to 'brick' unlockers may have unintentionally taken out some of its law-abiding customers. A closer look at the iPhone support forums show many of the issues deal with loss of data, which isn't... Read more...
