Under CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft has shown a surprising amount of “love” for its competitors. It has provided high-functioning Office apps to iOS and Android users well ahead of solutions for its own Windows Phone platform. It has even partnered with Dropbox, which goes head-to-head with Microsoft’s own OneDrive online cloud storage solution. Today, Microsoft has even more love to share, as it is taking steps to offer more robust cloud storage integration into its Office apps. That starts today with the addition of updated iOS Office apps that allow users to “open, edit and save documents from... Read more...
Box continues to think outside of itself (see what we did there?) with new and improved ways to approach the cloud storage game. Following the launch of a redesigned app for iOS users, Box just rolled out an overhauled version for team Android, as well as a special bonus for LG device owners -- 50GB of free space. Dubbed "Box for Android 3.0," this latest release represents a pretty significant update focused on making the cloud storage service both faster and more intuitive. To accomplish those goals, the latest release offers up a bunch of features. There's now a lightening quick document previewer... Read more...
When Google slashed the prices for its cloud storage service earlier this month, it appears to have set off a price-cutting jamboree among some of its competitors, some of whom have also launched new features to boot. In an email, IDrive said, “We launched Sync functionality today, got NSA Proof private key encryption, increased storage plans like crazy (how about 2TB for $150/yr?) and doing all of this to strike back against Google Drive.” IDrive now offers backup/sync plans that run from 600GB for $49.50 per year (300GB backup/300GB sync) to 8TB for $499.50 per year (4TB backup/4TB... We’ll forgive you if you’ve ever confused one for the other due to similar naming and brand colors, but Box and Dropbox are competitors. Dropbox’s cloud storage is hugely popular among average consumers, but it recently suffered a black eye when its database was hacked (just kidding, that was a hoax) its site went down for nearly two days. Box is taking full advantage of Dropbox’s bad press by announcing its new iOS apps and promising 50GB of free cloud storage for life for anyone who downloads its newly-redesigned iPhone or iPad app within the next 30 days. (Boos and hisses... Read more...
Cloud storage provider Box has figured out a few things. Early on, it targeted businesses with its user-friendly service as well as consumers, and even as it continues to develop business-facing features, it hasn’t lost the appeal that makes the average consumer sign up for an account, as well. Box has also figured out that branching out from merely storing data in the cloud is a good idea. The company announced a new note-taking feature called Box Notes that lets users jot down ideas, meeting notes, action plans, or what have you and collaborate with other users (ostensibly, coworkers) in... You can halt your plan to sift through your Box account and delete files you may not need or want anymore. For those of you mooching off the free plan Box provides, the cloud storage provider just upped the ante to 10GB, effectively doubling the amount of space to cram your photos, documents, and other files into the cloud. The company also announced a new Starter plan tailored for small businesses. It offers 100GB of shared space for $5 per user per month, good for up to 10 users, providing SMBs with an affordable option for cloud storage. "We're focused on removing any and all barriers to cloud... Read more...
When Roku introduced the Roku 3 range, it also brought a sleek new user interface. But to date, that UI has been reserved for use on the newest hardware only. For those still using an older Roku to stream media, there's a bit of good news on the UI front. Roku has started to roll out the new interface to prior units. You can pull it down manually by selecting Settings > Software update > Check now on your Roku player. For everyone else, you'll get it automatically over the course of the next two weeks. The new update (v5.0, build 804X) will roll out to the following supported players in all... Read more...
The cloud storage wars are raging on, and while you may think that consolidation would occur, it doesn't really feel that way. Google, Apple and Microsoft are all in play, but so are smaller outfits like Dropbox and Box.net. The last of those has actually just made a major acquisition today by picking up Crocodoc. The company provides technology to render and view documents on the web using HTML5. Viewing a document on Yammer? That’s Crocodoc. Looking at a resume in Linkedin Recruiter? Crocodoc again. Reviewing an assignment on Edmodo? Crocodoc. With this, Box is stepping up its content sharing... Read more...
Seems like a couple of companies are in the giving mood this holiday season. Sony and Box have just renewed a nice promotion through 2013, enabling those who buy an Xperia smartphone with Android 2.1+ to grab 50GB of Box cloud storage for free. Box works much like Dropbox or Google Drive, but getting a full 50GB for nothing isn't a bad deal. Whether it be images, videos, apps, documents (you name it), you can store, share and access files from any of your connected devices – computer, smartphone, tablet and internet enabled TV. The only major catch is this: it's not compatible with the Xperia... Read more...

With any cloud storage service, the speed at which you can upload your files is important – particularly for business users, who are often uploading large amounts of data. Given the need for quick uploads, it’s not surprising that Box has come up with a way to make them faster for business customers. Box is touting the speed boost from its new Box Accelerator as being a 10X improvement over its previous upload speeds. Image Credit: Box So what is Box Accelerator? It’s a combination of software and infrastructure, according to Box. The hardware has been placed in... Read more...
It’s a heated competition out there between cloud storage providers; two of the most popular, Dropbox and Box, keep one-upping each other even as they target slightly different demographics, and today Box announced a couple of moves that demonstrate how aggressively it’s trying to secure customers in the mobile enterprise. Box is betting on the continued growth of Windows Phone by offering an app for the platform that goes beyond simply offering cloud-connected storage and integrates specifically with the Windows Phone OS. First off, Box for Windows Phone sports a Metro-like interface,... Read more...
