ASUS is one of the key drivers of the netbook arena, at least in the sense that they are often the first to bring new features and platforms to market. Not only did they launch the very first commercially available netbook, the Eee PC 701, they can also lay claim to having the first Intel Atom powered notebook, the Eee PC 900A, as well as the first 10" netbook, the Eee PC 1000. Since the first Eee PC hit the market just over a year ago, we have seen a relatively constant stream of new products flow out of the Eee PC team at ASUS; both a blessing and a curse. Oddly, ASUS has actually been criticized... Read more...
Any of you holding your breath for the possibility of Advanced Micro Devices announcing its own version to Intel's atom processor for use in netbooks better have large lungs. AMD's Chief Executive Dirk Meyer announced Thursday: "We're ignoring the Netbook phenomenon--just thinking about PC form factors above that form factor." That is, AMD is focusing on bigger, and in their opinion, better things. Instead of doing battle with Intel's atom processor, AMD is instead banking on the people wanting more power than that offered by netbooks, and has their sites locked on processors to run notebooks designed... Gaming notebooks and an affordable price tag generally don’t go hand in hand. Today, however, MSI announced its newest GX630-028US gaming notebook with a price tag of just $799.99. So just what do you get for this price? Well, the GX630-028US comes with an AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core Processor, 15.4-inch WXGA display, NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT, a 250GB SATA hard drive, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, Super Multi optical drive, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a 2 megapixel Web cam. Not a bad deal, it seems. Like other MSI gaming notebooks, the GX630 features MSI Turbo Drive engine technology, which lets you over clock... Read more...
Social-networking giant Facebook is continuing to grow like mad. In fact, the company grew its active membership total from 90 million users in early July to 120 million now, according to Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer. While speaking at Salesforce.com's Dreamforce conference, Sandberg also noted, “We got more (members) in the last three months than in the first three years of our existence.”If you consider the current population of the world is estimated to be about 6.7 billion, then almost 2% of the world’s population has a Facebook account. Facebook isn’t calling it quits,... Read more...

From pre-paid calling cards to minute plans with so-called "free phones", sometimes it's painfully obvious that, although we hate to admit it here, it's not always completely about the hardware.  More than a few industry analyst have predicted that the mainstream PC of tomorrow will be nothing more than a thin client connected to the "grid" for services and applications.  Now, Computerworld's Mike Elgan ruminates about what will likely be the new frontier for affordable, mobile computing; the $99 Netbook with a "plan"..."Subnotebooks like the Asus Eee PC, the Dell Mini 9 and... Correction: HP has gotten more netbook-ish.  Today HP announced a new line of netbooks, and as opposed to the HP 2133 Mini-Note, which they were adamant was for the educational market and not to compete with the Asus Eee PC, this one is targeted squarely at that market. Why the big change?  Well, according to HP, the 2133 Mini-Note has "exceeded all expectations."  That and the burgeoning netbook market seems to indicate a hop into the middle of the competition might be a good idea.  On the other hand, quite a few analysts feel netbooks are stealing revenue from standard notebooks,... Lenovo's IdeaPad S10 is a 10" Netbook that sports low power consumption, ultra-portability, respectable performance and a well rounded feature set. It's built on Intel's new low-power Atom processor. Taking on such challengers as Asus' Eee PC and the MSI Wind, Lenovo offers this svelte machine for a modest $399 entry price point. While the S10's keyboard is a little cramped for a 10" netbook, we liked the machine's, build quality, fit and finish, and super-crisp LCD. Click the link below and check it out...
