When we first took a look at the ASRock Vision 3D 137B with NVIDIA 3DTV Play last year, we were quite impressed with the machine. It offered excellent all-around performance for a system in its class and had an extensive feature set that included Blu-Ray and 3D video playback capabilities, all wrapped up in what we considered to be an attractive enclosure. So, when ASRock came to us with an updated model outfitted with a newer CPU, GPU, and other components, we were eager to check it out. Once it arrived we were pleased to see ASRock hadn’t messed around with the system’s aesthetics... Read more...

A leaked presentation from circa 2010 has the tech world buzzing. The original document and mirrors have been pulled, but we saved a copy before that happened. While there's no confirmation from Microsoft on whether the document is accurate, it lines up extremely well with what we've seen Microsoft announce so far this year, as well as previous speculation on the company's next-gen Xbox 720, codenamed Durango. At 56 pages long, there's quite a bit of data -- we'll hit the most salient points. Future Platform Hardware - The slide below doesn't explicitly call out AMD's architecture, but other slides... The wide open worlds of 3D and Blu-ray are combining, and it's Asus that's bringing the two closer than ever. The company's new SBW-06C2X-U is a 3D Blu-ray writer, fully supporting BDXL, 6x Blu-ray writes, Blu-ray 3D playback, 2D-to-3D conversions, DVD upscaling to 1080p HD, 5.1 channel Dolby EX and DTS-HD and the ability to even play nice with Mac machines -- which cannot be ordered with Blu-ray from the factory, strangely enough. The device can be used upright or horizontal, and the sleek black form factor is certainly nice to look at. The unit is aimed at those who need to archive massive amounts... Read more...
The rumor mill is still churning out quite a bit of information on new consoles this week, including new data on Nintendo's upcoming Wii U. According to unnamed developers, the Wii U actually isn't as powerful as the Xbox 360 or PS3, despite boasting HD graphics and significantly improved hardware. According to Nintendo's public statements, the new console will have 8GB of onboard Flash, a new, Power-based CPU built on a 45nm process. IBM has hinted that the Wii U chip leverages technology found in its own Watson, which would make it a derivative of the Power 7 architecture. There's a substantial... Read more...
Redbox did something with Universal that it wasn't able to do with Warner Bros., and that's hammer out a multi-year agreement that will continue to make Universal DVDs and Blu-ray discs available for rental nationwide 28 days following their home release. The 28-day window has become somewhat of a standard between movie studios and new age DVD rental services like Redbox and Netflix. "The multi-year agreement between Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Redbox represents a win for consumers, Universal and Redbox," said Galen Smith, senior vice president, Redbox. "Redbox is committed to forging... Read more...
There's been no new Star Trek TV series since Enterprise limped off screens in 2005, but the huge success of the 2009 Star Trek movie and the gradual growth of Blu-ray has caught CBS' attention (CBS acquired ownership of the Star Trek franchise in 2006). The broadcast company is preparing to release Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-ray -- with substantial improvements. The DVD boxed sets that exist today were created from the taped broadcasts that were shown in the early 90s. Rather than repackaging that material, CBS has gone back to the original film stock and started from scratch. "They're... Read more...
Ouch. We knew the movie studios didn't like Netflix very much, but this is just brutal. In the viewpoint of the movie studios, they want people to go out and buy new DVD and Blu-ray releases. A rental provides only a fraction of the profit that an outright purchase would, but with $1 Redbox rentals and unlimited Netflix streaming for just a few bucks per month, why buy? There's hardly a good justification any more. But now, those who are impatient may find themselves buying more than renting. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group has just forced Netflix to wait 56 days to receive new release and... Read more...
"Smart" is still in, and while 3D took a back seat to a lot of other things at CES 2012, intelligence is still at the front of most companies' minds. Samsung is tapping into a technology developed by Flixster and Rovi, where consumers will be able to import their existing Blu-ray and DVD collections from participating studios into the UltraViolet Cloud, which will make them viewable on a wide range of products. Moreover, Disc to Digital can work with any authorized retail service and will initially be available using a new Flixster application on Samsung's Smart Hub. When consumers insert an eligible... We just got word from Redbox that starting on Monday, October 31, the daily rental charge for DVDs will increase 20 percent to $1.20 per day. According to Redbox, the price hike is intended to offset rising operating expenses, such as increases in debit card fees. Blu-ray discs, video game rentals, and additional day charges for DVDs rented prior to Halloween won't be affected, Redbox said. As as show of good faith and to help ease the transition, Redbox said it will discount the first day of all online DVD rentals to a buck from October 31, 2011 through November 30, 2011. Subsequent days will... Read more...
Introducing a new optical drive may not be top priority these days for tech companies -- particularly with many machines going without one altogether -- but Samsung's looking out for those of us who still rely on those tried-and-true coasters. The company has just revealed a new pair of drives, with one in particularly being especially exciting. The SE-208BW is a new hybrid product that combines an external ODD with a wireless module. It offers traditional CD/DVD playback and writing capabilities, but also features Samsung's own app to enable smartphones, tablet and PC users to wirelessly stream... Read more...
