One of the ongoing questions around AMD's Mantle API is how much support it would garner in actual shipping titles. True, EA had committed to adding support to the Frostbite engine, but that's the kind of announcement that can be quietly swept under the rug or might be integrated into the engine but with a minimal number of titles actually using it. So far this year, only Thief and BF4 have shipped with Mantle support -- the former is a minimally regarded game, while the latter has been dogged by play issues that have nothing to do with AMD's API but have distracted from its quality. Three other... Read more...
We've known for several days that EA would unveil a new chapter in the Battlefield universe at E3 2014, but the company has done more than that -- it also launched a surprise beta test for the upcoming Battlefield Hardline. The new game will be an urban cops-and-robbers shootout that drops players into the boots of either side in a more limited form of combat that's likely to focus on closer quarters and tighter objectives than the BF4 maps, some of which are sprawling affairs. The big surprise of E3 was that EA is launching a new closed beta program for PS4 and PC players that you can register... Read more...
Ever since it launched last year, Battlefield 4 has been practically synonymous with how not to launch a major entry to a beloved online franchise. Finally, some of the major flaws are being repaired -- or at least, they've been fixed on the beta Community Test Environment (CTE) server. This is the new server system Dice has set up for PC players that subscribe to Battlefield Premium and they've been rolling out new game changes over the past week. One of the major changes coming to BF4 is an increase in what's called the "tickrate." The term refers to how often the game updates the location of... Read more...
As we mentioned a few days back, AMD’s been working on a new set of drivers for its GCN-based graphics cards and APUs, which enable Mantle and a number of other features as well. Just to quickly recap, the Catalyst 14.1 betas (which were just released and are available here) are the first publicly available drivers from AMD that support Mantle, AMD’s “close to the metal” API that’ll let developers wring additional performance from systems equipped with GCN-based GPUs. The new drivers, however, will also add support for the HSA-related features introduced with the recently... Read more...
As one of the most anticipated games of the year, Battlefield 4 also has the distinction of being one of the most buggy releases, and that's regardless of platform. Even worse, Electronic Arts and DICE can't seem to catch a break. To wit, there's a new patch available for the PC version, and the main reason it exists is to fix a bunch of issues introduced in a previous update. Talk about taking one step forward and two steps back! Those of you wielding multiple graphics cards will be happy to know that the latest patch issues a fix for terrain flickering when running BF4 on a SLI or CrossFire configured... Read more...
Rumors continue to spill out into the Internet ahead of AMD's next-generation Kaveri launch regarding the CPU's overall performance, capabilities, and architecture. It appears AMD is upping the ante with this CPU in several ways, including a gaming bundle that will include Battlefield 4 with the highest-end A10 APUs. This deal, however, may come with a higher price tag. The new leaked prices on AMD's A10-7850K and A10-7700K point to a $189 - $167 debut price. The current top-end core from AMD is the A10-6800K, which runs $139 retail. AMD is comparing its new APUs against Intel's Core i5-4670K,... Read more...
The suits on Wall Street took notice of rumors that Electronic Arts had put a freeze on DICE from working on future projects such as Star Wars: Battlefront and a new Mirror's Edge title due to ongoing problems with Battlefield 4. EA shares dipped more than 8 percent as reports of halted production pranced through cyberspace. In a statement to Polygon, an EA spokesperson earlier this week acknowledged that there's much work to be done to fix Battlefield 4's persistent problems. "The team at DICE is working non-stop to update the game. Since Battlefield 4 China Rising expansion pack was already in... Read more...
The PS4 and Xbox One aren't out yet, but that's not stopping them from facing off in Battlefield 4, the next-generation, just-launched title from EA/DICE. We highlighted some of the visual differences we might expect between the console and PC versions of the game based on the performance of the in-game scaling software option, but now that the title has launched, what do we see? Quite a bit -- some of it good, some not so much. Fair warning here: The PS4 and Xbox One screenshots are quite large. I decided to preserve the YouTube videos and the original aspect ratios below, in order to give you... Read more...
The latest Battlefield 4 game trailer from EA is here, and this one is a single-player story trailer that gives you a taste of the sort of character arc you can expect from the game. The trailer starts out with the evacuation of American VIPs from Shangai and--wouldn’t you know it--things get a little crazy on the way out. (WARNING: Some NSFW language.) We’ve been impressed so far with the videos we’ve seen of the game, and this one is no exception. It looks like there’s a good bit of drama and intriguing characters in the single-player story to go along with the killer... Read more...
Every once in a while, a game comes out and pushes the envelope, requiring high-end hardware to run with maxed out visual quality settings at high resolutions. Battlefield 4 is one of those games, and if you're looking for an excuse to upgrade your system, you now have one. When you're shopping upgrades, Corsair wants you to consider one of its high performance memory kits, but does faster memory really matter for gaming? Corsair says it does, at least for BF4, noting that Electronic Arts recommends a minimum of 8GB of system memory. "Interestingly, Battlefield 4 takes a pretty holistic approach... Read more...
EA took the wraps off Battlefield 4 this past week, offering players a chance to experience a taste of what the game offers via an early beta. We've spent time with the game, tested its early performance, and come back to report the findings. AMD, of course, has been talking up the Battlefield 4 combination with a vengeance, highlighting the features of its new Mantle API and close partnership with DICE, Battlefield 4's developer. At the same time, however, this is just a beta -- while we'll be checking performance and commenting on game changes, this isn't a full review of the final product...... Read more...

It used to be laughable to think of Linux as a preferred gaming platform. Sure, emulators like Wine made a gamer's life a little easier on Linus, but things like driver issues and lack of native titles have always prevented Linux from stepping into the gaming limelight, at least until now. We're not sure if a tectonic shift is occurring right before our very eyes, but there's no denying there's a major push towards getting gamers to embrace the open source operating system over Windows. We're seeing it primarily from Valve with its upcoming SteamOS and Steam Machine boxes, though also from developers.... Read more...
We love a good gameplay trailer around here, and the latest one from EA showing off Battlefield 4’s multiplayer play looks fantastic. We already saw a lengthy (17 minutes) demo earlier this year that gave us a look at the fluid and detailed visuals as well as the storyline with a mix of scripted scenes and actual gameplay, and this latest video just adds to the fun. Judging from the clip, you’ll be able to fight with automatic weapons, perform hand-to-hand combat, and use a variety of land, sea, and air vehicles to take on your opponents. You can go solo in multiplayer mode, or you... Read more...
