Our friends at the Tech Report have a somewhat alarming article posted that you all should check out.  By now, we suspect you’ve all heard about the ‘TLB bug’ affecting all current quad-core AMD Opteron (Barcelona) and Phenom (Agena) processors.  If you haven’t heard of the bug, to put it simply, there is a problem with the translation lookaside buffer (TLB) and L3 cache that causes system instability under certain conditions.  The conditions that cause a problem are rare, but the issue has prompted AMD to release a workaround patch that motherboard makers will incorporate into the... One thing you have to love about Apple are their benchmarks.  When they used to tout the PowerPC series of chips, they had benchmarks showing how the G4 and G5 could topple anything that AMD or Intel were producing.  Then came the transition to Intel, and those benchmarks magically reversed themselves, perhaps in small part due to the major improvements brought about by Intel's “Core” architecture.So what does Apple do for benchmarks when it upgrades one of its product lines from an “older” Intel platform to a new one?  Make ridiculous benchmark comparisons of course!  Here... The gang at The Inquirer has aquired some new information regarding AMD's upcoming native, Quad-Core processor, dubbed Barcelona.  They've got a number of synthetic benchmark results that paint a very good picture of Barcelona's performance, should they turn out to be correct... "These performance numbers were based on systems using the Opteron 2356, or known to the world of us regular folks as AMD Quad Core at 2.3GHz. ExtremeTech has an article posted with information regarding AMD's upcoming "Barcelona" processors and the future R600 family of graphics cards.  The information was compiled last week during a briefing in San Francisco and includes quotes taken directly from AMD's Mario Rivas, Henri Richard, and former ATI CEO Dave Orton. The folks over at Ageia have informed us that they have just released their new RealityMark physics benchmark utility. Based on the highly popular CellFactor technology demo we utilized in our initial review of the Ageia PhysX card, the benchmark runs through a timedemo of sorts which is run both with and without the discrete PPU enabled. This provides the user with a very clear understanding of what performance gains the Ageia PhysX card is providing for their system. Fudo sends word that the industry will soon have a new DX9 benchmark that is based off of a boat racing game. Should the genre not excite you, the technical details surely will. Called RyderMark 2006 and based off a multithreaded Sahara game engine, we find support for Parallax Occlusion Mapping, 64-bit High Dynamic Range lighting with Anti-Aliasing, Shader Model 2.0 and 3.0, plus more. For multi-card support, ATI has CrossFire. Nvidia, on the other hand, has SLI. But that's not all, S3 has MultiChrome. In their latest review, The Tech Report gets a couple of Chrome S27 GPU's for testing, putting them up against Nvidia's GeForce 6600GT(both single card and SLI). Rahul Sood has posted some benchmarks in his blog of an Intel powered Apple iMac running Windows XP.  There were some graphical anomalies, and overall Rahul characterized performance as being similar to a "mid-range notebook".  Not earth shattering performance by any means, but interesting info nonetheless."We finally benchmarked the Apple PC in Windows successfully, thanks to the latest video driver release. Victor Wang has posted some interesting infomration over at XtremeSystems regarding Intel's upcoming Conroe processor. Using a Conroe sample running at 2.4GHz and an Intel 965G motherboard, he was able to run a healthy suite of benchmarks and has posted the results for your viewing pleasure.
