EA took the wraps off Battlefield 4 this past week, offering players a chance to experience a taste of what the game offers via an early beta. We've spent time with the game, tested its early performance, and come back to report the findings. AMD, of course, has been talking up the Battlefield 4 combination with a vengeance, highlighting the features of its new Mantle API and close partnership with DICE, Battlefield 4's developer. At the same time, however, this is just a beta -- while we'll be checking performance and commenting on game changes, this isn't a full review of the final product...... Read more...

PunkBuster, the anti-cheating service implemented in hundreds of online games, is down. As of the time of writing, the official PunkBuster website is up and down, after having been completely down for the past couple of hours. On Twitter, there are numerous reports of gamers who've been unable to play online in the most popular PunkBuster-backed title of the moment, Battlefield 3. Without getting into the reasons why a service like PunkBuster fails in so many ways, EA isn't ignorant of the current situation and has gone as far as to post an interim fix here (correction: apparently it is ignorant... We don't know if Electronics Arts' upcoming update for Battlefield 3 qualifies as the mother of all game patches, but it's certainly in contention for the update crown. EA said the update, which will roll out on June 4-5, is "a big one," an understatement of epic proportion, considering the multitude of tweaks, changes, enhancements, and fixes included within. "The next Battlefield 3 update goes live June 4-5 on all formats. As usual, the period between the last update and this upcoming one has been spent listening to our community, tweaking parameters, balancing performance, and eliminating issues... Read more...

After playing through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's single-player campaign and spending some solid time with the game in multiplayer, we can attest that MW3 is the latest well-executed title in the long-running Call of Duty franchise. The game's production values are excellent, the single-player campaign is gripping and intense, and all of the gameplay conventions and design principles the CoD series is known for are here. Whether or not this is a good thing depends entirely on how much you like the Call of Duty titles to begin with... Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Reviewed, BF3 Compared... Read more...

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, but could playing Battlefield 3 turn little Gustaf into a sadistic rat killer? Depends on who you ask. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in Germany is taking issue with the fact that you can kill rats in a "sadistic manner." This, along with any killing of virtual animals, can have a "brutalizing effect" on impressionable young males, according to a Google translated press release. The animal rights organization isn't happy about the fact that players can stab a rat in the back with a combat knife, pick up the dead rodent by the tail,... Read more...
Grim news and missteps dominate our console news this week. Sony advised investors that it was headed for its 4th straight year of posting an annual net loss. The company's underperforming TV business (now eight years in the red) was a significant drain on the company's finances. The company blames "a decrease in LCD television sales, reflecting price declines due mainly to deterioration in market conditions in the US and Europe and unfavorable foreign exchange rates." Hardware revenue declined "reflecting a strategic price reduction of PlayStation 3 hardware in advance of the year-end holiday... Read more...
Battlefield 3 dropped last week, promising a strong single-player campaign, an impressive new graphics engine, and up to 64-person multiplayer mayhem on huge maps. Despite a rough few days post-launch, the game delivers much of the multiplayer goodness that it promised, with a strong emphasis on team dynamics and an experience system that rewards both focusing on a particular class and learning the capabilities of all four. We dig into the game's extensive online goodness, however, we also deal with its tedious, flawed, and boring single-player missions... Battlefield 3: Multiplayer Brilliance,... Read more...

Have you ever tried to kill two birds with one stone? It's not always easy, and pet stores tend to frown on such things. But if you happen to need a videocard upgrade and are interested in picking up the just-released Battlefield 3 game from EA, well, Sapphire might have just what you're looking for. The new Limited Edition Sapphire FleX HD 6970 2GB GDDR5 BF3 Edition graphics card gives gamers access to a free copy of the full game everyone's talking about. Battlefield 3 has become something of a hot item in recent months thanks to the game's incredible visuals and gameplay videos that have left long-time fans of the series salivating. BF3 is the sequel to Battlefield 2 (released back in 2005), and while it's designed for XBox 360, PS3, and PC, the game was built around the PC platform, somewhat of a rarity in the modern age of console-dominated sales. In this video, GeForce.com's Kris Rey sits down to have a chat with DICE producer Patrick Liu. The Frostbite 2 engine that BF3 uses was designed for the title and, according to Liu, includes a number... Read more...
