It has been quite a while since AMD launched a truly new CPU core architecture.  It was way back in September of 2003 that the first "K8" based desktop processors arrived in the form of the single-core Athlon 64 and Athlon 64-FX.  And while the company has launched a slew of new desktop, server, and mobile processors since then, there haven’t been any major changes made to the base CPU architecture.   AMD did make some modifications to the execution core as they introduced processors for different sockets or with different L2 cache sizes, but overall the architecture remained largely unchanged.... EA is perhaps one of the most influential companies in the modern software entertainment industry.  The company owns some of the most popular gaming franchises on the market today: Sims, Madden,  C & C, and the list just goes on.  When EA speaks, the industry as a whole listens. What is EA talking about these days?  Innovation, or rather the lack of it in the industry today.  Sure, companies can make bundles selling rehashed sports games with limited improvements, but what about attracting new gamers?  That's why innovating is so important. “In his first in-depth comments since taking the... If you're running Windows Vista, or thinking about it, then you might know what ReadyBoost is. If you don't, it's essentially a way to cache some of the system page file to a USB drive.  The result is typically better performance on machines with limited memory.  The only problem is that it requires a USB 2.0 port. That means it's external; and therefore subject to being disconnected when whiskers thinks it's a fun toy.  It also makes it one more thing to drag along to a LAN party.   While some might wonder why fate can be so cruel, along comes InnoDisk... In early November of last year, NVIDIA unveiled their successor to the nForce 5, the nForce 600 series. The starting line-up included three solutions supporting Intel's Core 2 processor, each aimed at a different segment of the market and each with a different price point. The most expensive chipset in the series, the high-end 680i SLI provided a host of new features including dual X16 SLI support with a third X8 PCI-E slot. Next comes the 650i SLI, which lacks many of the 680i's fancier features like dual x16 SLI support, but makes up for it with a significantly lower price point. Finally at the... Read more...
One of the features of the Sound Blaster Xi-Fi that many have wished for in a laptop sound card was the simply amazing positional audio support for headphone users. According to sources at HKEPC, AMD is planning to launch multiple flavors of their upcoming native quad-core processors, codenamed "Barcelona" in June. And if the information they've compiled is correct, the fastest processor in the group will be clocked at 2.3GHz. "The next-generation AMD quad-core Opteron, codenamed Barcelona and fabricated by 65nm manufacturing technology, is natively designed with 4 functioning cores, each of them owns 512KB L2 Cache and share the same 2MB L3 Cache. Barcelona supports for 128Bit FPU and provides a capability of up to 4 FLOPS/clock. The interface... Read more...
Creative has announced their ALchemy project which is aimed at providing Sound Blaster X-Fi drivers for Windows Vista. In Vista, Microsoft has removed the Hardware Abstraction Layer(HAL), which DirecSound and DirectSound3D require. While games that use OpenAL still work, those that use DirectSound would face problems, until now. The project is still in the beta phase, but it seems promising. "The good news is that the Creative ALchemy Project allows you to run your favorite DirectSound3D games on Windows Vista as the developers intended - with full hardware accelerated 3D Audio and EAX...
