Microsoft clearly missed an opportunity here; just look at GE Lighting’s new LED table lamp (yes, that what it’s being called now). It looks just like the Cortana ring that you would find within Windows 10 or Windows 10 Mobile (or perhaps like one of those hipster Dyson fans). But instead, the GE LED table lamp has Amazon Alexa Voice Service (AVS) infused its base. As a result, the device has a built-in microphone and speaker for feedback and playing music, although expect to hear audio quality more in line with the diminutive Echo Dot. So rather than having a tall, cylindrical object reminisce... Read more...

What if we lived in a world where we never needed to wait in line in order to buy some milk or toilet paper? Amazon is working on making that dream a reality. The corporation has just opened a brick-and-mortar grocery store dubbed “Amazon Go” in Seattle, Washington and plans on opening 2,000 more locations of varying types. Amazon stated, “Four years ago we asked ourselves: what if we could create a shopping experience with no lines and no checkout? Could we push the boundaries of computer vision and machine learning to create a store where customers could simply take what they want and go.”Groceries... Read more...
If you had asked us just yesterday what autonomous driving and supermarkets have in common, we likely would have just given you a blank stare. But today, Amazon says that it is combining machine learning with machine vision used in autonomous vehicles to take retail shopping to the next level. Called Amazon Go, which Amazon bills as the “world’s most advanced shopping technology”, shoppers can walk into a retail store, scan a special Amazon Go barcode using the accompanying app, put your smartphone back in your pocket, grab your grocery items and go with ease. You never have to wait in a... Read more...
Do you need to move a lot of data? To be clear: we're talking lots of data. Sure, that 64 TB NAS box might seem meaty, but that's paltry compared to the kind of data we're talking about. Think 100,000 TB, aka 100 PB. It's almost hard to wrap our heads around that kind of storage, but that's the amount Amazon says it can move with ease via its new Snowmobile service. In essence, Snowmobile comes to us in the form of a pure-white 18-wheeler that's used to bring your data from point A to point B. Amazon says that Snowmobile will show up at your door after a quick assessment and then work with you... Read more...

When it comes to your data, we always suggest having multiple backups in place. Well, Amazon and Seagate have partnered up to make backing up files to different locations and storage mediums easy and seamless. What they've designed is an external hard drive called that Seagate Duet that automatically syncs all data to the cloud via Amazon Drive. The external drive offers 1TB of local storage in a slim and lightweight form factor that is as portable as a smartphone. It connects to PCs through a USB 3.0 connection for fast data transfers, though the Duet is a mechanical hard drive so it's not going... Read more...
There is a relatively new product category gaining steam. It's the gaming backpack for VR, which is essentially a desktop configuration that you strap to your back while wearing a tethered VR headset such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. These aren't wimpy systems, either. Zotac's recently announced VR Go sports a Core i7-6700T quad-core processor paired with a GeForce GTX 1070 graphics, and it's now available to purchase for $2,000.Zotac unveiled its burly VR Go backpack earlier this week but neglected to mention a price or when it would be available. Well, it's now showing up on Amazon, albeit... Read more...
Amazon took the consumer electronics world by storm two years ago with the debut of its Echo speaker, which is powered by the Alexa intelligent digital assistant. The Alexa/Echo family has since grown to include the pint-sized Echo Dot and the portable Amazon Tap. During that time, Alexa’s skillset has also ballooned to over 5,500 skills. According to a new report, it looks as though Amazon is ready to take the next step in the evolution of the Echo speaker by adding a large touch screen. The new Echo’s 7-inch display will reportedly be capable of tilting so that it is readable in varied environments,... Read more...
If you’re still full from eating tons of turkey on Thanksgiving and leftovers today, you probably didn’t get a chance to venture out today to take advantage of Black Friday sales in brick and mortar stores (and who wants to fight crowds when you can sit at home in your boxers and order most of the same stuff online). Luckily, Amazon Black Friday sales are already running, and the online retail giant has already tipped us off to its upcoming Cyber Monday deals. During Cyber Monday 2015, Amazon says that its customers ordered a total of 54 million items worldwide. That translates to nearly 630 items... Read more...
The biggest barrier to VR gaming right now is cost. High end VR headsets run a pretty penny and building a PC that meets the recommended requirements can be an expensive proposition, too. That is what makes this pre-Black Friday bundle on Amazon such a smoking good deal For less than a grand, Amazon is bundling an Oculus Rift with a CyberPowerPC gaming desktop built around AMD's Radeon RX 480 graphics card! Until midnight (Pacific) the exact cost is $999 with free shipping for Prime members. Considering the Rift alone normally runs $599 and the Radeon RX 480 streets for around $200, this is a really... Before too long it might be easier and quicker to list the things Amazon's digital assistant can't do rather than all the things it can. Case in point, Alexa just learned yet another trick, one of many of as of late. This newest trick, or "skill" as Amazon likes to call them, is the ability to transmit text messages. The caveat is that you have to be an AT&T subscriber to use the feature. AT&T is in full braggadocios mode at being the first and so far only wireless carrier to offer this skill. Using it, AT&T subscribers can summon Alexa to dutifully transcribe their voice message into... Read more...
Online shopping may seem like the modern thing to do, but if you're moving your mouse and pecking away at your keyboard (or tapping on your touchscreen), you might already be behind the curve. That will be the case if voice shopping takes hold, as Amazon would like to see happen. From now until Monday, Amazon Prime members can shop online using their voice. This is Amazon's first ever voice shopping weekend event. Of course for this to work you need to own an Alexa-enabled device. There are several out there, including the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot, Amazon Tap, Fire HD tablet, and Fire TV. If you... Read more...
