It's hard to believe there's a full fledged system packed inside Apple's slim and sexy iMac chassis. It was roughly a year ago when Apple revamped its all-in-one line, tasking the company's engineers to flatten the design as much as possible without sacrificing performance. What emerged was a sleek display measuring just 5mm at its edge with up to 40 percent less volume than the previous generation. It was such a radical design change that Apple had to abandon traditional welding methods in favor of a process called friction-stir welding, which combines friction-generated heat and pressure to force... This isn't your average all-in-one PC. Launching this week at IFA in Berlin, Germany is the DA241HL: the first Android-based all-in-one PC that's capable of multi-tasking, web browsing, gaming, and video playback. It's a new unit from Acer, and it's powered by NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 processor. It's boasting a 24-inch Full HD (1080p) display, as well as the latest and greatest rendition of Android -- version 4.2 (Jelly Bean). Thanks to MHL connectivity, the DA241HL can easily transmit smartphone content to a larger display for more comfortable viewing. It can also connect to any PC with Windows... Read more...
In a development that’s sure to turn the T-Mobile CEO's face that contested shade of magenta, AT&T announced that it’s Aio Wireless no-contract service will soon be available nationwide. Currently, Aio is available in certain markets in Florida, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia through brick-and-mortar stores; in Chicago, customers can sign up through the Aio website. It’s unclear if and when Aio (which is a subsidiary of AT&T) will build actual stores, but in any case, in a month you’ll... Read more...
Unless you're a gamer or a content-creation professional that requires a lot of computing horsepower, the latest crop of All In One PCs probably seem very attractive. AIOs tend to be quite the lookers, with sleek lines, large and crisp displays, touch capabilities--and of course, a small footprint. We're starting to see AIOs with better and better specifications too, and although they won't be your choice of machine for pwning n00bs just yet, products like the Dell XPS 27 Touch offer very solid specifications in addition to a premium user experience and lots of ports for connecting peripherals,... If you’re feeling nostalgic (or just want to save a buck), you can still buy a Gateway computer; Acer snapped up the brand a few years back and is still producing PCs under the label. The latest round of Gateways is nigh, and the lineup features both notebooks and desktops, including an AIO. There are two Gateway NE notebooks in the family--a 15.6-inch model and a 17.3-incher. Buyers can configure them accordingly, but the lowest-end model starts at $379.99. A 15.6-inch NE52204u with a quad-core AMD A4-5000 APU, 8GB of DDR3L memory, and a 500GB hard drive (5400 RPM) costs $399.99, while a... Read more...
With just a handful of exceptions, all-in-one (AIO) systems aren't exactly known for being easy to service and/or upgrade. We've seen a few AIOs that buck the unfortunate anti-DIY trend, and it appears Acer's new Veriton Z Series 20-inch class AIOs will fall into the user-friendly category as well. Acer's new AIOs feature a screw-less chassis design and modular components for easy maintenance and upgrades, the OEM says. There are two models, both offering consumers a choice of either Windows 8 Pro or Windows 7 Professional. The Acer Veriton Z2640G-UC1007X sports an Intel Celeron 1007U processor... Read more...
The sting of HP’s Palm acquisition and subsequent inglorious failure to do anything with it may be subsiding enough so that the company can revisit the idea of entering the smartphone market. Yam Su Yin, HP’s Senior Director Consumer PC and Media Tablets Asia Pacific (holy job title, Batman) told Indian Express that HP would indeed be getting back into the smartphone hardware game. When asked if HP was working on a smartphone, she answered, “The answer is yes but I cannot give a timetable. It would be silly if we say no. HP has to be in the game.” That’s about as unequivocal... There are plenty of AiOs around, and they pretty much all run Windows 8. Now, however, HP has unveiled a 21.5-inch model called the HP Slate 21 that runs Android Jelly Bean. There aren’t too many details out yet regarding the actual hardware inside the Slate 21, but we do know that its touch display is a full HD IPS affair and that it will run on a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor with Android 4.2 and 8GB of onboard storage, and it will have DTS sound, HP TrueVision HD webcam, WiFi Direct, and Bluetooth 3.0. There’s also plenty of support for external storage with three USB 3.0 ports.... Read more...
If you’re a customer of Aio wireless--a no-annual-contract wireless provider--today’s a good day, because the company just pushed out an OTA update giving you 4G LTE service. Aio also announced that it’s expanding its coverage map of Houston, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville and Gainesville, Fla. to include Ft. Meyers and Naples, Fla. In addition to the new 4G LTE capabilities, Aio announced a new handset, the ZTE Overture, which runs Android Jelly Bean and features a 4-inch display, 5MP rear camera and front-facing webcam-type camera, and up to 32GB of storage. Aio is actually a... Read more...
Dell has chosen to combine two trending computing design styles into a single system and call it the XPS 18 Portable All-In-One Desktop. It has all the power of a an entry level desktop and some of the portability of a tablet, though let's be clear that Dell isn't pitching you'll want to tote this across town on a train or in other ways that you might use an iPad or Nexus 7. It's portable in the sense that you can snatch up the 18.4-inch Full HD display and lug it from your home office to the living room, plop it on the table, and switch gears from Google Docs to gaming with the kids. Or take it... Read more...
We've hit a turning point in technology, one in which the old ways are, well, old and outdated. Traditional desktops still exist, sure, but bulky towers are fading right before our eyes just like that scene in Back to the Future where the people in Marty's photograph slowly disappear. In place of medium and large-size rectangular boxes are space-saving form factors like Intel's Next Unit of Computing (NUC) and, to a lesser extreme, sleek looking all-in-one (AIO) designs that are winning favor among consumers. At the same time this is happening, increasingly powerful mobile devices are flooding... Read more...
We’ve already mentioned a little something about ASUS’ upcoming Z87-based motherboards, but ASUS has plenty of other products geared for 4th-generation Intel Core processors (Haswell), as well, including a new consumer desktop and a pair of all-in-ones. In addition to a 4th-generation Intel Core processor, the ASUS M51 desktop features NVIDIA or AMD graphics and the ASUS Smart Cooling System equipped with automatic fan speed control and a front-mounted hot-swap drive bay called the ASUS Universal Storage Module (USM). There’s also a removable UPS (uninterrupted power supply) called... Read more...
