Does your Echo or Echo Dot sound a little too robotic for your tastes when responding to queries? If that’s the case, then Amazon is working diligently to make your digital assistant AI mastermind sound a bit more “human” with regards to its speech patterns. Until now, Alexa’s female voice, while helpful in an increasing number of ways thanks to thousands of skills, is rather monotone and speaks at a steady cadence. However, Amazon is infusing Alexa with the ability to whisper and even change the pitch of her voice. The changes come as additions to Alexa’s Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML).... Read more...
“Don't let the Warriors blowing a 3-1 lead distract you from the fact that…” The Golden State Warriors had a record-setting run during the NBA regular season (2015 - 2016) and were even looking good throughout the playoffs. Heck, the Warriors had a 3 games to 1 lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers when it all fell apart. The Cavaliers would rally during the finals to win three straight, clutching the 2016 NBA championship title. Needless to say, the meme community was (and still is) unkind to Steph Curry and his crew for the embarrassment. Golden State has a lot to prove this year in the playoffs,... Read more...
It is time to take your stick figures to the next level, as you can now transform your scribbles into professional-level art. Google’s AutoDraw uses artificial intelligence to determine what the user is drawing and then offers to “improve” it. Users first scribble with their finger an image on their phone, tablet, or computer. AutoDraw then uses an algorithm to suggest a more polished, pre-designed image created by an artist. These artists include HAWRAF, Erin Butner, Julia Melograna, Pei Liew, Simone Noronha, Tori Hinn, and Selman Design, who have all submitted their own unique interpretations... Read more...
A year after defeating South Korea’s Go master Lee Se-dol, Google’s DeepMind AlphaGo is once again ready to challenge the world’s top players. Google, the China Go Association, and the Chinese government are planning to host the “Future of Go Summit” in Wuzhen this coming May. The “Future of Go Summit” is a five-day festival intended to bring together Google’s AI experts and China’s top Go players. There will be a number of major events during the festival. “Pair Go” will be a game between two pros, however, both pros will also have AlphaGo as their teammate. This event is supposed to “take the... Read more...
Elon Musk is taking the next step to connecting everyone to the Borg Collective. The SpaceX and Tesla CEO has set up a company called Neuralink, with the company’s end goal being to connect the human brain and artificial intelligence. Neuralink is still in the very early stages of development and currently has no public presence. Musk promises that more information will be available next week on the website Wait But Why. He tweeted, “Long Neuralink piece coming out on @waitbutwhy in about a week. Difficult to dedicate the time, but existential risk is too high not to.” The website’s manager Tim... Read more...
If you’re a regular user of Google Photos, then you know that the app and online version of the service uses machine learning to “put a name to a face”, making it easy to organize or search for photos by typing in a person’s name. Or you could type in the search term “beach”, for example, to bring up some photos from your last trip to the coast. Google is now expanding those capabilities to videos, with the Cloud Video Intelligence API. This new API, which is currently in Private Beta, employs deep learning and the TensorFlow framework to analyze online videos and pick out pertinent details for... Read more...
Back in late 2015, NVIDIA introduced the world to Jetson TX1, which crammed “supercomputer” performance into a platform that had a footprint smaller than that of a credit card. NVIDIA is back at it with the successor to the Jetson TX1 and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that it’s called the Jetson TX2. NVIDIA says that Jetson TX2 can be used for “intelligent” factory robots, commercial drones and smart cameras. However, we’re sure that developers will be able to think of dozens of uses for the versatile platform to enable new classes of artificial intelligence (AI) driven products.... Read more...
Is Elon Musk secretly working on a race of Dr. Whovian Cybermen? The magnate recently argued at the World Government Summit in Dubai that human beings would need to merge at least slightly with robots in order to keep up in an increasingly AI-dominated world. Musk fears that humans will become irrelevant if they do not incorporate the technology they have created into themselves. The World Government Summit was also Musk’s opportunity to launch Tesla in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Musk explained that while computers can communicate at "a trillion bits per second", humans can barely type with... Read more...
Things are definitely looking good over in NVIDIA land these days. Yesterday afternoon, the company announced its fiscal Q4 2017 and full-year fiscal 2017 earnings and the results were quite impressive. Revenue for the quarter shot up 55 percent to $2.17 billion compared to the same period a year ago. Likewise, full-year revenue rose 38 percent year-over-year to $6.91 billion.NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share for the quarter were reported at $1.13 compared to just $0.52 a year earlier, while the full-year metric was $3.06, representing an 83 percent increase.   Microsoft is wasting no time in putting it new Artificial Intelligence and Research Group to work. The company just announced that its Microsoft Cognitive Services now includes 25 tools that form the backbone for the Skype Translator and Cortana (among other Microsoft products). Two of those new APIs are Bing Speech and Content Moderator. Bing Speech is capable of not only translating speech into text, but it can also convert text to speech. Microsoft’s speech recognition technology uses acoustic and language models to tailor its services for a specific language, and to make it easier to... Read more...
If you’re a Raspberry Pi developer that is at all interested in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, we’ve got a treat in store for you. Google is looking to bring its AI and machine learning tools to the Raspberry Pi starting this year, but it wants your help and input to make it happen. Google has launched a survey that includes questions about how often developers spend working on software and hardware projects, and if they are interested in fields ranging from wearables to drones to IoT to robotics to 3D printing. It will use input gained from this survey to narrow its focus on... Read more...
It’s not very often that we get lengthy commentary from Gabe Newell, Valve’s reclusive CEO, but things definitely took a turn for the better yesterday when he took place in a reddit AMA session. As expected, Newell took questions on a number of topics near and dear to the hearts of gamers, including the mythical Half-Life 3 which may or may not ever see the light of day. Thankfully, things progressed much better than his last AMA session in 2015. Rather than force you to peruse through the entire AMA discussion thread to find salient comments made by Newell, we’ve compiled a thorough list here... Read more...
Artificial intelligence allows us to push the boundaries of human capabilities. AI can contribute to self-driving cars, aid in medical diagnosis, and respond to us when we ask a device about the weather. Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella, however, recently warned listeners at the Digital Life Design conference in Munich against hubris with regards to AI. Nadella was particularly concerned in his interview about replacing human beings with robots. He remarked, “The fundamental need of every person is to be able to use their time more effectively, not to say, ‘let us replace you’. This year and the next... Read more...
In early January, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced his plans to build his own Jarvis personal AI assistant as an homage to the AI “butler” of the same name in the Iron Man movies. "My personal challenge for 2016 is to build a simple AI to run my home and help me with my work. You can think of it kind of like Jarvis in Iron Man," said Zuckerberg at the time. "I'm going to start by exploring what technology is already out there. Then I'll start teaching it to understand my voice to control everything in our home -- music, lights, temperature and so on." Nearly a year later, Zuckerberg is back... Read more...
