Don’t panic but Google’s AI may have accidentally (or not so accidentally), sort of, kind of, created its own secret language. This internal self-taught language has apparently been developed by the company's Neural Machine Translation (NMT) and not a human. How was the secret language created and discovered in the first place? “Anything you can do I can do better; I can do anything better than you.” That is likely Microsoft’s mantra, as its research wizards have reached a milestone in speech recognition, with a word error rate (WER) of just 5.9 percent. This just in! Unicorns just discovered in Yellowstone National Park! It probably goes without saying, but that little bit of news is pure fiction. Unfortunately, it is not entirely unlike something that may appear in your Facebook feed according to Intersect, which recently conducted an experiment that detected a number of fake news stories. Intersect logged every trending news stories across four different Facebook during business hours between August 31st and September 22nd, 2016. We’ve stated on many occasions that Windows 10 is an excellent operating system, albeit one with a few rough edges that could be smoothed-out. However, Microsoft has angered some users over the past year or so, in its willingness to dance right up to the line of what customers feel is acceptable practice for promoting adoption of its new OS. Amazon Alexa has been gaining new skills at a dizzying pace. Back in early June, Alexa had amassed 1,000 skills, and by the end of that month the number had already jumped to 1,400. Apple is obviously trying to up its AI game to compete with the likes of Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook. The company just acquired Turi, a machine learning platform startup, for $200 million USD, which should help bring in some much needed IP. Turi began as an open-source project at Carnegie Mellon University in 2009, under the watchful eye of Professor Carlos Gusterin. Gusterin relocated to the University of Washington where he received an endowed professorship in machine learning from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Google DeepMind recently commenced a new collaboration with the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS). DeepMind is working with Moorfields Eye Hospital in east London. The goal is to create a machine learning system that will be able use digital eye scans in order to recognize sight-threatening conditions. Moorfields Eye Hospital DeepMind researchers will use millions of anonymous eye scans to train an algorithm to better spot the early signs of eye conditions. Intel Xeon Phi Processor DieIt’s been nearly two years since we first heard about Intel’s next generation Xeon Phi “Knights Landing” processors, which are geared towards the High Performance Computing (HPC) segment.
