ARM has announced its next generation of graphics hardware (codenamed Mali). The new GPUs are meant to highlight a significant improvement in energy efficiency, with ARM claiming that its next-generation GPU architecture will be a whopping 45% more power efficient than previous models. The new GPUs are also meant to address a broad array of market needs, with products scaling from entry level devices to midrange and high-end products. Last week, we took a trip to San Diego to meet with Qualcomm and discuss the company's cutting edge 20nm radios and upcoming Snapdragon processors. Unlike the already-launched Snapdragon 801 and 805, these are fundamentally new chips with updated CPU cores as well as Qualcomm's new Adreno 400-class GPU. Qualcomm announced a Pro version of its Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 chip, which features the Adreno 320 GPU instead of the older-generation Adreno 225 and a promised 4x boost in performance. Among the Adreno 320’s features is the ability to access the GPU’s computational capabilities through APIs that open the door to next-generation 3D graphics, hardware acceleration to enhance the Windows experience and gaming, and more.
