After its conference call last week, AMD is jonesing for some positive news to toss investors and is planning a major announcement on Monday to that effect. Rumor suggests that a number of statements may be coming down the pipe, including the scope of the company's layoffs, new parts based on Piledriver Opterons, and possibly an ARM server announcement. The latter would be courtesy of AMD's investment in SeaMicro. Intel's Developer Forum (IDF) starts on Tuesday, and the chip manufacturer is expected to discuss its Ivy Bridge refresh, Haswell, talk about its upcoming 32nm tablet platform, Clover Trail, and possibly share a few details on its 22nm Atom SOC's. Performance per watt is going to be a major focus at IDF this year; Haswell is rumored to be capable of idling below 10W. When AMD told investors that its second quarter results would be significantly lower than anticipated, the company's stock price went into a skid. Historically, AMD's quarterly warnings have been followed by ugly earnings calls, filled with enough red ink to drown a small army of accountants. It is, therefore, a pleasant surprise to see that while the company took a nasty hit to overall revenue, with sales down 11% sequentially and 10% year-on-year, it managed to keep its head above water with a net income of $37 million. AMD's burgeoning profitability took a hammering in Q1 thanks to a $700M deal with GlobalFoundries, its purchase of SeaMicro, and a sequential decline in sales. Total company revenue was $1.59B (down from $1.69B in Q1 2011), but Sunnyvale delivered a $590M net loss. Much of that is attributable to the company's new deal with GlobalFoundries, in which AMD paid GF $700M, and transferred all of its ownership stake in the company in exchange for "non-exclusivity" for 28nm APU production. It didn't take long to draw up the paperwork and work through the legalities of the more than quarter-of-a-billion dollar buyout, which was first announced less than four weeks ago. AMD's CEO, Rory Read, has made no secret of his plans to take the company in new and different directions, but the company's server announcement today caught the market by surprise. Sunnyvale has purchased SeaMicro in a deal worth ~$330 million, the majority of which ($281M) will be paid in cash. The acquisition brings AMD's onetime CTO, Fred Weber, at least temporarily back to the fold; Weber left AMD to take a position with SeaMicro.
