Ever since Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One in May, the user community has raised holy hell about the 24-hour mandatory online check in, the loss of used game sales, and the onerous online requirements that prohibited game or console imports into countries where the Xbox One service hasn't officially launched. Microsoft's entire E3 demo was buried thanks to a $499 price tag and a crushing video from Sony. Throwing military users under a bus by insisting they just buy an Xbox 360 was apparently the final straw. Today, Microsoft threw in the towel. The Xbox One will not require a 24-hour check in.... Just in case you jumped right down to the news this afternoon, we’re popping in to let you all know that we’ve just posted a new article here at HotHardware in which we evaluate the features, performance, and overclockability of Corsair's current flagship Dominator TWIN3X2048-1800C7DFIN G DDR3-1800 memory kit.  As its name implies, this 2GB (2 x 1GB) memory kit is rated for operation at 1800MHz with a CAS latency of 7.  But it is also one of a select few memory kits to support Intel’s Extreme Memory Profiles, or XMP.  And it turned out to be a heck of an overclocker too. Click... A few months ago, we rounded up some of the fastest DDR3 memory kits that were available and came away impressed by how well frequencies and performance had scaled in the short time since DDR3 had been introduced on the desktop.  Since that article was published, however, not much has changed on the DDR3 front in terms of overall performance.  1800MHz kits are still the cream of the crop and the latency of the top kits hasn’t dropped below CAS 7.  The landscape has changed a bit though, thanks to ever dropping prices, maturity, and some newly introduced features. At the time our... Read more...

Most people hear the word BitTorrent and immediately think piracy, but there are legitimate uses for the technology according to a group of TorrentSpy founders who are now founding a new company, FileRights.  The goal of FileRights is to allow companies who feel their content is being distributed in a fashion that isn't beneficial to them to sign up and report the files which would hopefully be removed quickly. "FileRights was started by some of the same people that run the Torrentspy search engine and who are fighting a copyright lawsuit brought by the major motion picture studios regarding... Read more...

There is an interesting article posted tonight at NeoSeeker. They bill the article as a review of Powercolor's X1800GTO card, but they test a number of different CrossFire configurations in an attempt to see if there is a difference in performance when using a dongle or not, and when switching from an x8 / x8 to an x16 / x16 PCI Express Lane configuration. "Our Crossfire testing proves that two X1800 GTO's, even on an older dual 8x board will still provide good performance. Despite the gains that an X1800 Crossfire Master card setup present,... There is an interesting article posted at NeoSeeker tonight. They bill the article as a review of Powercolor's X1800GTO card, but the crew also tests performance in a number of different CrossFire configurations. According to their results, there doesn't seem to be a compelling reason to purchase an X1800 Master card to use alongside an 1800GTO. "Our Crossfire testing proves that two X1800 GTO's, even on an older dual 8x board will still provide good performance. Despite the gains that an X1800 Crossfire Master card setup present, that's... The post is not in english, but the pictures at HKEPC tell the whole story.  It seems that some (perhaps all) Radeon X1800 GTO cards can be easily modified to unlock the additional 4 pipelines lurking within the R520 GPU.  HKEPC used an HIS card, and simply flashed the BIOS with a modified version that unlocked the additional pipelines.  This is basically the same mod procedure used to unlock the disabled pipes on the Radeon X800 GTO as well....
