AMD Radeon HD 7790: Affordable DX11 Gaming

Batman: Arkham City
DirectX Gaming Performance

Batman: Arkham City

Batman: Arkham City is a sequel to 2009’s Game of the Year-winning Batman: Arkham Asylum. This recently released sequel, however, lives up to and even surpasses the original in many ways. The story takes place 18 months after the original game. Quincy Sharp, the onetime administrator of Arkham Asylum, has become mayor and convinced Gotham to create "Arkham City" by walling off the worst, most crime-ridden areas of the city and turning the area into a giant open-air prison. The game has DirectX 9 and 11 rendering paths, with support for tessellation, multi-view soft shadows, and ambient occlusion. We tested in DX11 mode at various resolutions with all in-game graphical options set to their maximum values.

The performance trend was ever so slightly different in the Batman: Arkham City benchmark. In this game, the Radeon HD 7790 cards once again finished in between the Radeon HD 7850 and 7770, but they performed essentially on par with the GeForce GTX 650 Ti. In fact, the reference clocked 7790 trailed the 650 Ti. The factory overclocked 7790s, however, caught up with or slightly pulled ahead of the 650 Ti.

I think it's also worth mentioning that the 7850 is a quite excellent overclocker. At stock I think it's definitely not worth the extra $30, but once overclocking is taken into account, if you can afford the $30 you are crazy not to spend it (assuming you are comfortable with overclocking of course).

I have to agree with you. Im running a MSI 7850 and the first thing I did was overclock it and it runs great. I actually used BF3, Far cry 3, and Metro 2033 as a bench to gauge about how my computer runs vs others. It does really well. The 7790 might be the more affordable option but like you said spending the extra few dollars or waiting till one goes on sale makes it worth it. Only advantage I see with the 7790 is newer architecture.

Good reviews about new AMD Radeon 7790. I like it and that one is perfet for anyone who need bit better performance on D11 games.

I think it's performance is right where it should be as a 7790. There is still room for a 7830 if AMD feels it's necessary.

Solid performance her for the price.  What's interesting is that this is a new GPU for AMD.  Wondering if they'll be buffing out the high end soon!

I completely agree.  I saw last night that this was a new GPU, and considering the performance they were able to put out with this low end budget card, i'm really excited to see what's next.

Also wondering what the response will be from mean green.

I don't know about team green, but I think along with a 7830, there might be a 7890 and a 7930, plus 7990 based on this chip.

I have been Looking for a reasonable upgrade to my graphics cards and this fits the bill quite nicely

Geez, my video card is so outdated. I use a Radeon HD4650. Aside from letting me play most games at a lower resolution and medium settings, all it really allows me to do is watch Blu Ray movies on my computer. I seriously wish I could afford to upgrade but with 2 kids and another on the way, it's probably going to be at least another 5 years or so til I can upgrade. It would be so wonderful to win some sort of gaming computer giveaway. I've put all of my money over the last 6 years into my family. It would be great if some sort of higher power looked upon me with favor and chose me to win a gaming PC. ;-)
