iTunes Nears 10 Billion Music Downloads And Prize To Downloader

The 10 billionth iTunes download is fast approaching, and Apple's offering up a $10,000 iTunes gift card prize to one lucky winner. That winner will either be the downloader of the 10 billionth song, or the person who submits the first non-purchase online entry form immediately following the download of the 9,999,999,999th song.

Based on those rules, considering there are still over 100 million songs to go, it makes no sense to try to enter at the time of this writing. It's totally based on when you enter, not some random drawing of entries, unless you happen to tie for the 10 billionth entry.

Last year, Apple had a similar promotion for the 1 billionth App Store download. However, they must value App Store downloads much more than iTunes downloads, as that promotion included a lot more than just the $10,000 iTunes gift card: the lucky winner collected an iPod Touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro, as well.

Apple calls it "one huge milestone for music," and it is, but Apple hit a bigger milestone much earlier. In 2008, iTunes became the number one U.S. music retailer.

This is totally believable to me, I wonder when other media types are gonna catch on to this at a larger degree. The thing that makes no sense to me is it is much better than any other means of media distribution. You need no store you need no packaging except for a down loadable media picture and title board, you don't even have to ship it anywhere. This is even more of a huge price drop for things like e-books, but the industry fights it, by trying to raise prices etc. I think authors are gonna start putting out there own books to a large degree and leave the publishing industry to flounder in it own death.

Cool deal for 1 person. Though I'd rather have 10k cash, I'm sure apple can afford giving someone free music for basically life.

You can see the current counter here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/10-billion-song-countdown, if you want to try to time your entry. Good luck!

Good business model. They make a crapload of money. They are a dominating force in the music industry and can write their own rules because of the huge amount of sales that they generate.

Their giveaway is nice and will really brighten someone's day. But they should have made it a prize for multiple winners to enjoy. Gawd knows they can afford it,..............

But then it wouldn't be the 10 billionth person would it? :P

I did the math and based on the average download rate (as estimated from the page) it will be nearly 10 days before they hit the mark. Of course, the rate will probably begin increasing at an exponential rate as it get close to the mark, so it's likely to happen much sooner.

I'm guessing the 21st.

This is a very awesome gesture by apple. The Ipod has been a monster of a hit since it game out. Congrats to apple for reaching this milestone and congrats to the lucky winner.

Microsoft is probably in a corner crying wishing the zune had more success.

48 Million more to go ATM... still in pretty much in line with my original estimate.

I looked at the entry form, and you're allowed 25 entries in a day...  so you might want to start entering a few minutes before you think it's going to hit and keep repeating.

:D thing i hate about the free entry is... we got to keep entering the info in :( lol

At least in Firefox you can fill it out once, then just click the fields and select the one value in the dropdowns.

someone win yet?

Nope... 24 million to go...  still no great deviation from my original extimate.

0

there are like 100 downloads per second so its going to be a hard one to win.

Yea I counted ~10,000 per minute. 23.25 million left, leaves ~1 day 14 hours 45 minutes. Though that rate will probably go up tomorrow, I revise my previous prediction from today to tuesday morning around 9 am.

just 16 million more to go :D should be done very soon. :D

10 million more to go :D
