The number of rumors we've read about in leading up to the launch of Apple's upcoming iPhone 6 can only be summed up as "incredible". You might imagine, then, that with the phone set to launch in about three weeks, the rumormill would start to calm itself down. Not so. As it appears, the iPhone 6 has another trick up its sleeve, coming to us in the form of a reversible Lightning cable.
Normal USB or Lightning connectors, like the one seen to the left in the above shot, have their connector pins affixed to to their tops. Apple's proposed cable, by contrast, moves the entire pillar to the center, while slimming it down in the process. The important thing to note here is that this cable will still fit into an ordinary USB or Lightning port. If this proves real, then Apple will have effectively taken some of the excitement out of the upcoming USB Type-C connector.
As far as I'm concerned, a cable like the one seen in the above shot is long overdue, and could have happened long ago. So why now? It could be that Apple is planning something bigger. We've already talked about "Made for iPhone" accessories in the past, and more recently, we learned that Apple could be planning Lightning-based headphones. For those, a simpler connector would be ideal - after all, you don't need to worry about the orientation of a 3.5mm audio jack.
Whenever a new connector comes out, there's rarely a great reason to get that excited. With this one, though, it could mean that some interesting things are going to come along with it. It's not like the iPhone 6 launch needed any more hype, but it keeps on getting piled on. What else are we going to learn before the phone's September 9th unveiling?
