Acer C910 Chromebook Receives Fifth Generation Intel Core i5 Brain Transplant

Acer’s 15.6-inch Chromebook 910 was introduced in January and is already a competent performer. The Chromebook 910 has been available with Broadwell-based Intel Celeron and Core i3 processors and can be configured with a Full HD (1920x1080) IPS display (base systems come saddled with a 1366x768 display). The Chromebook C910 and Acer’s wide selection of other Chrome OS-based notebooks has allowed it to capture roughly 40 percent of the Chromebook market according to Gartner.

Today, Acer is ramping up the Chromebook C910’s performance with the announcement of a new processor option: a fifth Generation Intel Core i5-5200U that is clocked at 2.2GHz. The company is confident that this new processor option will allow the Chromebook C910 to mop the floor with any other notebook on the market currently running Chrome OS – well, maybe except for Google’s recently revised Chromebook Pixel.

“The new faster performing Acer C910 Chromebook with an Intel Core i5 processor is raising the bar for Chromebook performance,” said Acer America Mobility Business Manager Carlos Siqueiros. “The advanced technology will boost productivity and help our education and commercial customers get the most out of their Chromebook experience for collaboration on important projects and research.”

All other standard features remain the same, which means you’ll receive USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, HDMI-out, SD card reader, Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Battery life is still rated at up to eight hours and the device is still a rather portly 4.85 pounds.

Whereas a base Chromebook C910 with the 1366x768 display, Celeron processor, 4GB of RAM, and 16GB SSD will set you back $299, the new $499 Core i5 model comes standard with the Full HD display, 4GB of RAM, and a 32GB SSD.

Acer says that retail availability for the Chromebook C910 will commence next month.
