Xbox Live Gold Goes Free for the Weekend

It's been a busy week for Microsoft. The Redmond software giant rolled out its much anticipated Xbox Live Dashboard update with a brand new look and fancy new features like voice controlled navigation, and it also launched an iOS app as well as an app for Windows Phone 7 users. And to kick things off, Microsoft is letting all Xbox Live Silver members enjoy the benefits of a Gold membership free for the weekend.

Obviously there's more than good will at play here. Sure, Microsoft's getting in the spirit of the gift giving season, but the real motivator is to give non-Gold members a glimpse of the new Dashboard and feature-set in hopes that they'll be tempted to pony up for an ongoing subscription.

But let's not be cynical; a free weekend is a free weekend, and if you're not already a Gold member, this is a great way to try-before-you-buy. Going Gold gives you access to apps like Netflix, Facebook, and Hulu Plus, as well as online gaming and member-only deals and previews.

Who has an xbox and an outdated pc? this guy. The only reason I bought a 360 was cause all my friends are either too poor or mouse/keyboard retarded. They can't seem to use 2 hands on 2 seperate devices lol. And Microsoft continues to roll out sales on the 360, in November they sold 1.6 million units JUST in the USA. I feel sorry for them though, the next xbox/ps4 is coming out sooner than a lot of people thought. Microsoft is supposively showing it off at CES this year in January...maybe. If not then, E3 seems to be more likely to most websites. I wouldn't be suprised if Microsoft throws the xbox 720 (or whatever they gonna call it) out around the same time with Windows 8.

Nice of them to try and sell more gold accounts by getting their customers hooked on the features lol. Microsoft is no dummy.

This is nice, wish we knew a head of time, we have a friend who has xbox but his gold acct ran out. The bf could have done some gaming with him. But it's kind of late in the weekend to try to get a hold of him now lol :s

I have a Gold account and really don't care for the new dashboard. All I need is to race on Forza4 online. I don't want to connect with facebook, myspace, or stream a movie. I don't want to type with a controller when i have a great keyboard on my computer. For people who don't have a computer i guess this is great and now parents who think their kids are safe playing games on the Xbox now have to check who's on facebook...............
