It was a very general statement by Gates.....he could have meant the project would begin in the next year or so, that the initial BETA would be released in the next year or so, that SP2 for Vista would be released in the next year or so....its just too broad of a statement to know for sure. |

I agree that is is far too broad a statement. My best guess is that he means a Vista SP2. I would welcome a new Windows, however. I'm afraid to go Vista, and although XP is fine for now I would eventually like to go 64-bit, and I haven't heard good things about XP 64-bit. |

i think to really get windows 7 done right it would take more time |

well they had what 5-6 years to make vista and look at the POS that it is. For spending that much time on an OS it should be doing way more than what Vista is doing now. Vista is like those guys sat on their ass for 4 years and then shat out a OS with some fancy interface that didnt really do anything more than XP other than DX10, and some more annoying features. MS will release its new OS when it will be profitable, and not really any sooner. |

Apparantly early version Windows 7 pictures are looking very much like Vista right now. Obviously it's in an early stage, but if they are using Vista as ground work then they don't need the long development cycle. |
