I love WD's product line, but why is this news? Evidently all they did was to format the disk with HFS+ before boxing it up. Most Mac users, of necessity buying Windows-targeted products, know how to do that already.

There are still quite a few Mac users who don't know how. Just look at a lot of users (like on college campuses) who buy Macs for different reasons. Stability compared to Windows, customer support, etc. Whatever their reasons are, quite a number are not tech savvy and go to the Genius Bar for all sorts of questions. This makes it easier for them to just look for products that are already compatible out of the box and plug it in.

For people like us, it isn't news.

Right,... it's a non-story at best. I already have a 1TB Western Digital external drive and it uses USB 2.0, FireWire 400, and FireWire 800 to connect with. (I employ the FireWire 800 connection) It was designed for Winders but I bent it to my will with the iMac.

FireWire 800 is lots faster than USB 2.0

@ryuGTX: When I last hooked a new (i.e. unformatted) HD up to a Mac, it immediately asked whether I wanted to format it. I don't know if it's changed with more current OSes, but I hope not-- it was way easier than the well-buried Windows equivalent.
