Upcoming PS3 Firmware to Add BD-Live

Upcoming PS3 Firmware to Add BD-Live

BD-Live (AKA Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0) titles were released earlier this year, despite the fact that there were no players yet capable of supporting BD-Live.  But ...

Hi again everyone. Here’s a quick preview of the next PLAYSTATION 3 system software update coming up in the next few days. Firmware v2.20, introduces a number of features to further enhance your PLAYSTATION 3 as the hub of your entertainment center.

Most notably, the update enables the PS3 to support Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, also known as BD-Live. You can connect now to the Internet while playing discs that support BD-Live to obtain additional content and special features. These features vary from disc to disc, and will keep your BD discs fresh with new content and in some cases exclusive content only accessible to owners of BD-Live enabled discs. On April 8th Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release The 6th Day and Walk Hard on Blu-ray; these titles will be among the first to take advantage of BD-Live. With this update, the PLAYSTATION 3 becomes the first Blu-ray player on the market with BD-Live functionality.

With the price of upcoming BD-Live standalone players expected to be $100 more than an entry level PS3, your choice is made easier.  Standalone Blu-ray player, or PS3 with some console gaming goodness?  Hmmm.

Hadn't heard of BD-Live until now. A great idea and even better sales point now for the PS3. Still the thing that would tempt me the most to buy one is the upcoming Gran Turismo 5.

i wonder when they will have bluray drives for pc with this feature

Considering all it takes is a software update to add this functionality, I would image it won't be long before Blu-Ray drives and burners get updated drivers/software as well. If it was this simple though, I wonder why they didn't do it sooner? Unless there wasn't any Blu-Ray media that had this feature on it yet.

I do not see this as a performance improvement of the console.Seems more like a marketing gimmick to make others buy the console

it does seem like a gimmick

they always launch something that seems cool the first time but if you have a ps3 and use that feature for the first time, you will see that it isn't much of a deal

This is the advantage the PS3 has over the other Blu-Ray players.  And it also highlights one major advantage of HD-DVD.  All HD-DVD players had a network connection with the ability to upgrade a requirement.  Most Blu-Ray players do not.  So early adopters will not be able to use the new features.  But these people knew what they were getting into and new the advantages of the PS3 so it's their own problem, and I'm sure most will just buy a newer player later anyway.
