Upcoming PC-Exclusive FPS Toxikk Promises Properly Old-school Arena Combat

It goes without saying, but games have changed a lot over the years. I'm not talking graphics, but mechanics. Take free-to-play, for example. Its impact on gaming today is enormous, but ten years ago? It was virtually unknown. And then there are our first-person shooters. Remember the old days when regenerating health wasn't a thing? Leveling? Classes? Heck - a cover system? I do, and I think back to those days fondly.

Apparently, I'm not alone, as the upcoming PC exclusive FPS Toxikk proves. Developed by Germany-based Reakktor, Toxikk promises a 1999-esque arena combat experience that gets rid of all of the "enhancements" we've seen added to such games since then. Based on what's seen in the gameplay video below, it's safe to say that this is a cross between Unreal Tournament and Halo - two very excellent FPS titles for their respective platforms.

With Toxikk, the developers promise "no BS" - no leveling, no covering, no health regen, no classes, no iron-sight aiming, no customizable weapons, and, believe it or not, no reloading (adhering to the UT design). Effectively, it's skill and skill only that'll help you succeed in Toxikk, not class or skill choices you make. And to me, that's awesome.

Another promise from the developers: Toxikk is not going to be a "free-to-play" game. Pay up front, and it'll be like the old days where you actually got an entire game for that purchase price. The game is set to launch this December on Steam as an Early Access title, and currently sells for $15. If you like what you see and want to support the game's development at a greater level, many other packages exist, which include multiple copies of the game and other perks.

This is one release I'm looking very forward to.

I love free to play games whether it's an MMORPG like WOW, or a FPS like Planetside 2. You either love them, or you hate them and you didn't have to pay anything. :)

Video lookks pretty darn polished for "pre-alpha". I don't have anything against modern takkes on the FPS, but I do get a certain nostalgic feeling when I thinkk backk on my first LAN experiences with Quakke 2. I would love to get backk to that simplicity. This game lookks slickk for a $15 title. Thankks for the review and pointing it out!

Reakkkkktor... More kk's please.

Personally, I'm an addict for the leveling system. The ability to customize my character and choose skills is something I look for in games and nearly always draws me in. Then again, my brother always wanted to play games like Quake 2, so I get that those feelings aren't universal.

I'll buy into this, but I don't know how I'll do in it without a few mods to help the old-fart out.

I miss the old fps as well. Wait? Double jumps? I don't remember jumps at all really from way back? Skills...

Can't they set these games to play in space, or in locations that it makes sense to be able to jump that way. Something that makes it seem plausible that jumping like a monkey is useful in a war simulation? Maybe mutant monkey spawns that we can play with, or kangaroos?

Well, at least it looks great for a fps and at only $15. When it gets closer to 1.0, perhaps their will be more evolved arena stages that will be useful with that. Will be watching out for this title. Thanks.

Not interested. I'm sure this is them trying to appeal to a certain crowd or pull gamers away from today's typical FPS games...but they do realize that gamers who love these sorts of games have those types of games to play still. Quake Live. Unreal Tournament and the games that followed it are still heavily played. Wait, there was another Unreal Tournament being in development?

Good luck to them. Let's see how it does. The name kind'a ruins it for me, for some reason. It sounds toxic.

@nfs3freak It's all those extra kk's that make it sound trite...
