TomTom's
Live connected service is making its way onto the XL series in the new TomTom
XL 340S LIVE. The new TomTom XL 340S LIVE will likely feature many of the
popular features found on the original model, including IQ Routes, TomTom
MapShare, Advanced Lane Guidance, and text-to-speech. It will also have LIVE features
such as fuel price updates, local Google Search, real-time
traffic information, weather forecasts, and a feature called QuickGPS Fix which
is suppose to speed up satellite location. AT&T's network will provide
the wireless data that powers TomTom's LIVE Service.

The TomTom XL 340S LIVE features Local Search powered by Google. In addition to millions of Points of Interest that are pre-loaded on the TomTom XL 340S LIVE, customers can also access countless shops and businesses via TomTom’s LIVE Services from wherever they are and navigate directly there.
Optimal Routing
The TomTom XL 340S LIVE enables users to always drive the smartest and most efficient routes, whenever or wherever they go. The TomTom XL 340S LIVE includes TomTom’s exclusive IQ Routes™ technology. It calculates routes based on historical speed measurements for every time of day and for every road segment, from large highways to small local roads. In up to 35% of all cases, drivers get a faster route, saving significant travel time, money and fuel.
Wireless Real-Time Traffic Feeds
In addition to TomTom’s embedded IQ Routes technology, the XL 340S LIVE automatically and wirelessly receives real-time traffic speed and incident reports every two to five minutes. Traffic delays can be heard audibly and are displayed on the screen. The driver can either choose to remain on their current route based on the new estimated time of arrival, or can take advantage of a faster, alternative route suggested by the device based on its knowledge of current and historic traffic conditions.

In 9 or 10 years these things will actually drive the car for you while you take a nap in the back seat. They'll wipe your chin after you eat,....your nose after you sneeze,....unfortunately they'll be up to $2,500.00 by then.

lol realneil. I don't think we'll ever come to the point of self-driving cars...well not yet anyway. Though a few cars do have something called accident avoidance technology (your car brakes automatically if it senses you're about to collide into something). However, that won't do you any good if someone crashes into you. TomTom LIVE seems to be in direct competition with Garmin and MSN Direct service. The biggest challenge will be accurate traffic updates and rerouting around traffic jams. If they can do that well, LIVE will be very popular in major metro regions. |
